Study: The More Trees We're Surrounded By, The Lower Our Stress Levels

-Lining city streets with trees reduces physiological symptoms of stress in humans. The thicker the tree cover, the lower the stress levels, study finds.

We all know that a walk in nature can help slow the maddening pace of modern life and bring us back into the moment, but a recent study tells us just how many trees are necessary to keep us calm.

Researchers put people in stressful situations and then showed them 3-D videos of various "city"scapes, each with different densities of tree cover.

The thicker the tree-cover, the lower the subjects' stress levels dropped.

The researchers, from the University of Illinois and the University of Hong Kong, subjected 160 participants to various stressful scenarios, including having them prepare to deliver a speech, or perform a math test, in front of judges and cameras.

Once the participants were fully stressed out, they viewed one of 10 six-minute videos of city streets that changed only in the amount of tree coverage, ranging from 0 to 70 percent...

I love trees and when I moved a few years ago one of the first things I did was plant a dozen trees. When I saw the above article I immediately remembered a poem I learned in grade school...

Trees are the kindest things I know,
They do no harm, they simply grow
And spread a shade for sleepy cows,
And gather birds among their bows.

They give us fruit in leaves above,
And wood to make our houses of,
And leaves to burn on Halloween
And in the Spring new buds of green.

They are first when day's begun
To tough the beams of morning sun,
They are the last to hold the light
    When evening changes into night.

And when a moon floats on the sky
    They hum a drowsy lullaby
    Of sleepy children long ago...
Trees are the kindest things I know.

How long did it take them experts to figure that out? Tell ya what, let me take them hunting in the swamp at the evening hunt and watch them pee their skinny leg jeans.

We love nature. I would love to be totally away from the city. Our dd and family used to live on 2.25 acres about half covered with trees. I could sit out all day and just soak it in. They had to move for her husband's job and though they still live on an acre, it doesn't have a lot of trees.

Our mobile home park is in a somewhat quiet area and it is an old park so we have a lot of mature trees. We heard a couple of owls the other night.

I haven't seen Church Lady in a while. Love her!

I’ve planted 11 trees since we moved to our little acre. Two didn’t make it due to buck rubbing. That when we learners to protect our young trees.

This year I’ve putting in at least 7 more (natives—none of this European or Asian stuff sold in nurseries).

If you plant more trees, more critters will show up. There is an old outdoorsy thing called a 9 tree rule. That is the minimum to attract squirrels.
