    Thumbs up Greenleaf: Another Disappointment

Well I watched the first 2, or maybe it was 3, episodes on On Demand last week. I'm very disappointed and a little irritated with Oprah's depiction of the church.

I'm hardly surprised though. This is the image of church Oprah she saw growing up, and, as I've long suspected, this is how she sees the church as a whole. And of course she had to throw in a storyline of one of the family members (the maternal uncle) with an important position in the church as being a rapist.

The pastor's son is an adulterer involved with the pastor's secretary. The pastor's wife (played Alexis Carringtin style by the wonderfully talented Lynn Whitfield), is a cold, materialistic, selfish woman with little compassion for people including her own children.

Oprah, plays a nightclub owner, and sister of the pastor's wife. The relationship between them is quite volatile and I'm sure there are going to be some great "fight" scenes between the two.

The only two redeeming characters appear to be the pastor (played by Creflo Dollar look alike, Keith David) and his oldest daughter (played by Merle Dandridge), a minister who returns home to bury her sister that died under mysterious circumstances.

Also in the 2nd episode, it is inferred the younger daughter's husband is discovering that he is attracted to men. So it's definitely a trashy, soap opera depiction of church life. It's sad because they're all good actors and so much could've been done to make this a great show.

But when worldly people who think they're saved attempt to create a program about the church, it's bound to fail.

As badly as I'd like to watch the entire season, I can't stomach much of it, so I'll pass. The "old me" liked soap operas back in the day, and this program does have the tendency to suck one in, so-to-speak.

Anyone watched it? Here's a glimpse.

    Just as I suspected, Sis.

Another (unintentional?) mockery of the Church. I wonder what motivated Oprah to do this?

I'll never watch but given VL-W's description, it sadly sounds like it fits what's happening in a few churches in our nation. The worse part is that some will watch it and think that it fits ALL churches because of the few that have these types of issues. But you can't get ratings by focusing on what the Lord is actually doing in many churches where the people love Him and each other and uphold a strict standard of holiness.

I believe she was motivated by satanic influences as well as her growing up experiences in the Church. The incest/rape storyline was taken right out of her childhood experience of being sexually abused by family members.

It's too bad because here was an opportunity for her to present the Church in a good light and draw people to Christ. She claims to be a Christian and that Jesus is her Savior, yet she trashes his Church with these spiritually bankrupt characters. It's disgusting to say the least.

I guess we'll never see the Church portrayed in a good light on TV. We'll have to be content with the quality Christian films that have been coming out as of late. :-)
