My sis calls from Alaska on her iphone and the reception is clearer than when my dd calls from 15 miles away. Sister's phone is new though.

The landline is set up to the security system. If we remove it, then the alarm starts beeping continuously.

Both dh and I have cell phones and call each other for free, but we also have a private AND a business landline. I call most landline numbers in our country for free. The cost is NOK 150 per month for both numbers. (approx 18 dollars)

On second thought: Of course it isn't for free when we pay NOK 150 a month but no matter how much or little we call it's that price.

I have both - the landline is part of a package deal (along with internet and cable TV). The cellphone is an old, small, flip-style phone that fits easily into my pocket. I prefer the landline because the voice quality is better.

Interesting, so no one here has only a landline? Kinda thought there would be a couple of holdouts.

I think it's pretty clear that a cell phone can be invaluable in certain emergency situations (car breakdowns, medical conditions that require immediate attention, etc.) With the elimination of public payphones, a person kind of needs one if he's not staying home most of the time. And with the pay-as-you-go plans that are available, it's not expensive to have one.

I noticed last week the nearest pay phone to my house is gone. We just have the prepaid flip phones, it's the right thing for us.

Can't remember the last time I saw an actual Pay Phone.
