Rules governing the gift of rules

Oh, that's right. There is no "gift of rules" listed in the scriptures. Anyone infatuated so deeply with rules, rules and more rules usually is possessed by a religious spirit. The pharisees had lots of rules and Jesus rebuked them for it.

Rules located in the writings of Paul and his contemporaries are Christ's rules.

1Cor 14:37 . . If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of The Lord.

1Ths 4:1-2 . .We beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more. For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus.

People that oppose Christ's rules are not his friends.

John 14:15 . . If you love me, you will comply with what I command.

John 14:21 . .Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me.

John 14:23-24 . . If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching . . He who does not love me will not obey my teaching.

John 15:14 . .You are my friends if you do as I wish.

It took a while before I figured out that this isn't yet another Webers thread. I was going "uh huh".

Paul's wishes often expressed his own personal longings rather than teaching Christ's rules. The above verse is just one example. There are quite a few more.

    Rom 1:13
    Rom 7:15-21
    Rom 11:25
    Rom 16:19
    1Cor 7:7
    1Cor 7:32
    1Cor 10:1
    1Cor 10:20
    1Cor 11:3
    1Cor 12:1
    1Cor 14:19
    1Cor 16:7
    etc
    etc
    etc

So you're saying that in this case Paul's wish is contrary to the wishes of Christ ?

Let's see how normative the ability to speak in tongues is according to the Bible :

1 Cor 14:23 Therefore if the whole church comes together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those who are uninformed or unbelievers, will they not say that you are out of your mind?

The Spirit's will, as per 1Cor 12:11, trumps Paul's will.

That passage is hypothetical, and meant to accent 1Cor 12:12-30.

@@@But God is good, so much so that Paul cannot keep up with him. Trumping "all" is hard to do though.

@@@Hypothetical perhaps but still recognizable to his audience. How many short of "all" have the ability to speak in tongues in your church ?

The focus of 1Cor 14:5 is upon what Paul would've liked; which of course was trumped by the Spirit's will as per 1Cor 12:11 and also 1Cor 12:12-30.

Paul was a grown man, i.e. I'm pretty sure he was old enough to know that people can't always have their own way; not even when they're big wheels in Christ's body like the apostles were.

    1. Respect one another

“Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets” (Matt. 7:12). These forums have people from numerous theological backgrounds and beliefs. WE certainly will not agree on everything. Therefore, when engaging in discussion or debate, please address “ideas” rather than personalities. Please do not insult, belittle, or use derogatory remarks towards one another. Keep posts on topic and address the subject rather than the person or their personality. Treat others as you expect to be treated. If you and another poster have a difficult time talking to one another then it is better not to get into a discussion with that person.
