Some prophetic words should be "confirmed" before they are acted upon. Others do not require "confirmation" before instantly obeying them. Learn to tell the difference.
For example, a word such as I received from the Lord years ago while ministering at a church in the Toronto area, did not require "confirmation." The word God gave me to deliver was, "Have the congregation march around the building!" That word did not require any major life change on anybody's part in order to obey, so we simply obeyed instantly. I was told later by some of the church leadership that God had typically brought the church a word to march around the building before a major transition. This "march," unknown to me, signaled them that change was coming.
However a prophetic word such as that one should move to another city, go to the mission field, or step out into some areas of ministry, DOES require on some level a major life change. These types of words should be submitted to mature spiritual authority, who can help us put these words into the context of our lives in the right way and in the right timing. We should pray over words such as this, positioning ourselves spiritually for the Lord to speak needed confirmation into our hearts. Voices of confirmation might also come through dreams, visions, or other prophetic ministries. And stay alert for confirming similitudes as well. But do NOT make a major life change based ONLY upon a prophetic word or a dream. Let God confirm major life changes through at least two or three additional channels, as well as witnessing to your own heart by the Holy Ghost. Be Blessed!
