There's the well known Wimber story I really like:

"A professional musician who played the Las Vegas circuit for 5 years, John later signed with the Righteous Brothers. When John was gripped by God in 1963, he was a "beer-guzzling, drug abusing pop musician, who was converted at the age of 29 while chain-smoking his way through a Quaker-led Bible Study."

He soon became a voracious Bible reader and after weeks of reading about life changing miracles in the Bible and attending boring church services, John asked a lay leader:"

"When do we get to do the stuff? You know, the stuff here in the Bible; the stuff Jesus did, like healing the sick, raising the dead, healing the blind – stuff like that?"

He was told that they didn't do that anymore – only what they did in their weekly services. John replied, "You mean I gave up drugs for that?"

Sounded like my kind of guy.
I don't remember reading that story though I had started reading his stuff as far back as the 80s. But I love it. It seems like God always works through these kind of honest, non-religious guys.

I first bought "Power Evangelism" and then later "Power Healing" (I think back in 1987). Since I was feeding mostly on WoF books and tapes at the time I and was only learning that there was a separate "Charismatic movement" outside of the Faith Movement, it would take me some time to understand the Vineyard distinctive.

I totally forgot I had those books. I still remember how the Power Evangelism opened up if I remember, him telling a story about being on a plane and looking at another passenger and seeing 'adultery' written across his forehead. If I remember the story accurately before the plane ride was over the man had confessed to his wife and they both got saved.

But anyway, it was in his books that I learned about Paul Cain. I was impressed by how the man could operate in the Spirit as he did.

I remember being ministered by some students from John Wimbers' school back in the 90s. They were right on the money in the words they were giving to me. I know that the Vineyard guys and us WoF guys had some doctrinal disagreements but I have always appreciated their desire to minister in the Spirit.
I bought "Surprised" when I was researching for my videos responding to the "Strange Fire" stuff. I heartily recommend it. But I need to buy "Miracles are for Today" too for future reference. Johnny Mac claims that Deere brought Cain into his office one day to show him a true prophet and Cain was drunk and incoherent. I'd like to get Deere's version of that story.
