I don't know about anybody else but whenever I pray in tongues even "silently" or "under my breath", one thing I have noticed is that my tongue is moving, even if it is ever so slightly. It can be quite rapid, but not noticeable.
.
This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
(Ephesians 4:17-18)
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...
(Psalm 1)

Yeah. I can force it not to but it does so naturally.

Exactly!
"Force" is the right word for it, it seems quite "un-natural" for me to not move my tongue.

No, I pray in the Spirit quite often, under my breath.

Well said!

It makes perfect sense. We all pray silently every day (I assume...I hope we all do) adding tongues to that is the same thing.

I find it difficult to pray in tongues silently...the unction is to 'let breath flow'. I tend to think it is a spiritual release...as others said, difficult to restrain the tongue..
The tongue is an unruly member and IMHO this is one key purpose of speaking in tongues...it is a deep surrender...one that takes us to a new depth of relationship.
Good topic though...will ponder this more

There is a reason it has to be forced not to move. Because it's not 'natural' to keep the tongue from moving. It's intended to be done by the tongue and come out the mouth. But one can do it very quietly. I clench my teeth to keep my lips from moving but my tongue is still moving and it's a slight whisper that you'd have to put your ear to my mouth to hear.
Am I saying I can't do it in my mind only? I can, I just never do. I think there could be some debate about the effectiveness of tongues and prayer in the mind only, especially when you consider 'authority' and how it is released.
