    Biden signs 17 Executive Orders

Joe Biden begins signing executive orders making masks compulsory and scrapping 'Muslim ban'

New US President Joe Biden has signed 17 executive orders in his first hours in office targeting some of his predecessor Donald Trump's most controversial policies.

Nine of the orders undid his immediate predecessor's policies, with multiple others targeting Covid, climate change, immigration and racism. Biden invited TV cameras into the Oval Office on Wednesday – and said the first executive order he was signing was to make face masks compulsory across US government properties to try and combat coronavirus.

Biden then signed an order which will see $1.9trillion of economic help offered to those affected by Covid including the extension of a ban on evictions.

The third order saw the US formally rejoin the 2015 Paris Accord aimed at combatting climate change.

More orders were signed over the course of Wednesday evening. One of the most notable Trump decrees reversed by Biden was the former president's so-called Muslim ban, which barred travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the US.

He also wants to distribute 100million doses of coronavirus vaccines during his first 100 days in office, and help offer better healthcare to Americans living in poverty.

Trump signed the Muslim ban shortly after coming into office in January 2017, and said he had done so for national security reasons.

President Biden also revoked Trump-backed plans for the Keystone XL oil pipeline, which angered environmentalists and Native Americans whose reservations it crossed.

And he outlined plans to offer an eight year path to citizenship for undocumented migrants, a marked departure from President Trump's hardline stance on immigration.

Talking to reporters, Biden said his predecessor Donald Trump had left him 'a very generous letter' but refused to reveal its contents, 'because it was private.' He added: 'I will not talk about it until I talk to him.'

After signing those orders, Biden will swear-in the men and women he has appointed to work for his administration.

Biden entered the Oval Office for the first time shortly before 5pm EST on Wednesday.

He also signaled plans to rejoin the World Health Organization. Trump quit the WHO last year after accusing it of conspiring with the Chinese government to cover up the coronavirus outbreak.

Meanwhile, newly-inaugurated Vice President Kamala Harris swore-in two new Democrat senators, giving her party a slight majority in the upper house of the US Congress. As Vice President, Harris – a former California senator – will cast a tie-breaking vote over any issues that cause a 50-50 split when voted on by senators.

The Keystone XL cancellation is very bad for my part of the world.

Oil and gas production, besides farming and ranching, are the fiscal backbone of our province. We have, through our jobs, businesses and taxes, poured billions into Canada as a whole.

The deep state, through Justin Trudeau, Barack Obama and now, Joe Biden, seeks to smother the Petroleum Industry in Alberta. And we know that, even though Mr. Kenney is asking Trudeau's government to do something, he won't. He vowed at the beginning of his first term as Prime Minister to shut down all oil and gas production in Western Canada, particularly Alberta, and yet still import from foreign countries who have far inferior safety and production standards.

This is a statement from our provincial Premier, Jason Kenney.

    Copied and pasted from Facebook

The United States is our most important ally and trading partner. Amongst all of the Canadian provinces, Alberta has the deepest economic ties to the United States with $100 billion worth of exports, and strong social connections that go back over a century.

As friends and allies of the United States, we are deeply disturbed that one of President Biden's first actions in office has been to rescind the Presidential permit for the Keystone XL Pipeline border crossing.

My thoughts are with the 2000 people who lost their jobs today, and all those who are coping with the devastating consequences of this decision.

The US State Department's own exhaustive analysis conducted under President Obama's administration concluded that Keystone XL would actually reduce emissions, as the alternative will be to move this energy by higher emitting and less secure rail transport.

The Government of Canada has more ambitious emissions goals than the new US Administration, and our provincial government is investing billions of dollars in the development of emissions reductions technology.

This means that Alberta, Canada, and the Keystone XL pipeline are part of the solution in the energy transition.

For months we've been told that the Biden transition team would not communicate with foreign governments on this or other issues. And now a decision has been made without even giving Canada a chance to communicate formally with the new administration.

That's not how you treat a friend and ally.

We will continue to fight for Alberta's responsible energy industry, and for the 59,000 jobs that this project would create.

Alberta's government calls for the federal government and Prime Minister Trudeau to immediately enter into talks with the Biden administration on their cancellation of the Keystone XL pipeline in the context of a broader agreement on energy supply and climate action.

Failing an agreement with the American government, we call on the Government of Canada to respond with consequences for this attack on Canada's largest industry. We are not asking for special treatment, simply the same response that Canada's government had when other areas of our national economy were under threat from the US government.
