100 Years Ago: Lying minister settles out of court for a dollar and an apology – Greeley Tribune

100 Years Ago for the third week of December 1920 from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:

At the Noah's Ark store in Greeley, Christmas trees range in price from 25 cents to $1 each. Come pick out yours!

One-tenth of Greeley residents live in local apartment houses, which are said to be the best houses in the state, outside of Denver. It is also cheaper to rent a house than to buy one and make payments.

A State Teachers College professor sued a minister after the minister told his congregation that the professor's son was playing football for Eaton, but was not a student there. That wasn't true, because the boy was an Eaton student. Because he defamed his son, the professor sued the minister for $2,500. They settled out of court for $1 an apology from the minister, and he had to tell his congregation his statement was not true.

In the past year since Prohibition went into effect, 70 stills have been shut down in Colorado, and authorities confiscated 650 gallons of whiskey and 53 gallons of wine.

The entire crew of a Medicine Show in Eaton was arrested on gambling charges. The leader of the crew, Little Beaver, was also charged with practicing medicine without a license.

J.F. McCrery had problems with his Tribune newspaper being blown away before he could get it in the morning. He solved that problem by placing a section of a large drain pipe in his front yard. The carriers simply drop the paper in the pipe and it won't blow away. "Mac" said there is no patent on the device.

The Poison Ivy Club held its annual dance at the Odd Fellows Hall this weekend. It was well attended.

Dr. G.R. Miller of the Social Sciences at the State Teachers College here said that child labor is a major problem in the United States. Speaking to the Women's Club, he said there are two million child laborers in the country with many of them at 10 years old or less. Said the professor: "No democracy is safe as long as it tolerates child labor."

At Greeley's Gift Store, they are having a sale on Christmas gifts. Men's and women's handkerchiefs are 5 cents to 75 cents each.

In girls' high school basketball, Johnstown beat Platteville, 28-4.

In a full-page advertisement for the Weld County Garage, proprietor D.R. McArthur said he is having the clean-up sale of used cars. "The cars will be sold regardless of the cost," he said in the ad, "because we need the money."

"100 Years Ago" is taken from the original pages of the Greeley Tribune, the Weld County Republican, and when they merged, the Greeley Tribune-Republican.

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
    (Ephesians 4:17-18)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...
    (Psalm 1)
