A bunch of Norwegian powerlifters in the 265+ pound class were travelling to Sweden a few years back and they posted pictures of themselves on the plane on a forum. Turned out they had two guys occupy three seats, one next to the aisle and one next to the window. These guys were of course huge in every way - very broad and some of them quite fat on top of that, with legs like tree trunks. Perhaps something to consider for obese families.

    To AJ:
I've known people on both sides of the spectrum. I've seen those who eat as gluttons and never gain an ounce. Metabolism plays a much bigger role in weight gain than some smug skinnies would like to admit.

To be fair, I will concede that when I was young, eating out was done in privately owned restaurants and people were served proper servings. With the coming of the franchises, servings literally doubled. That is when the great weight gain began as I see it. In any healthy diet, a serving of meat is the size of a deck of cards. In the cafeterias of the '80's, a serving of meat generally covered the plate.

Some people are able to eat tons of food without gaining weight because they have a really high metabolism and need to eat that much just to maintain their weight. So their eating habits don't necessarily translate into a sin of gluttony. Some gluttons throw up their food in order to keep their weight down which typically makes the gluttony in and of itself even worse. Some gluttons keep being gluttons even though their bodies have grown totally out of shape and they are extremely unhealthy. Their decision to keep up their gluttony in the face of this demonstrates the depth of the gluttony or the depth of their addiction.
Some people aren't gluttons and their eating habits are within normality but they manage to gain a few pounds a month steadily until they are hundreds of pounds overweight. The failure to do something about the resulting health- or even lifethreatening condition may fall under the category of the sin of laziness or neglect. Knowing what good to do but refusing to do it.

You do realize that not all overweight people or airline employees are Christians, right?

If the only way a fat person can fly so as to not have half their body weight carrying over to their neighbor is to pay for two seats, so be it. That's not being unmerciful or mean or shaming anyone, that is just being considerate of others. My best friend is obese and only flies first class where there are roomy seats. She knows that this is just how it has to be. She knows that she could literally ruin someone's life if she has to sit next to them in a normal seat for several hours. All obese people know this as well. It's just a fact of life, AJ.

    Pay for 2 seats? No.

Pay for a seat he knows he'd be more comfortable in? Maybe.

Most people can't afford to pay for 2 seats or even premium seating of some kind.

Obviously, you've never had a weight issue.

    It's not that simple.

If it was, there wouldn't be all that surgery going on for people to lose weight and those who chose that route find it's not even easy that way.

A few months ago I flew from San Francisco to Philadelphia. A man gets on that had to weigh around 460lbs. He was HUGE and ALL EYES were on him.
He had to come down the aisle side ways. I felt sorry for him but I must confess, I hoped he wouldn't be seated next to me.
I know some people will probably get on my case for saying that, but mind you, this is a 6 hour flight and the seats are very narrow.
This means his rolls will cover the entire arm rest and rub against me the entire 6 hours.

Ends up he sat on the same row as I was seated ( in the emergency row) in a window seat, so he had extra leg room but not extra width.
The man next to him was obviously very irritated

    Don't worry Catchy

If you sow laughter at a fat guy on plane then you will reap a fatter guy sitting next to you and everyone will be laughing
