    100 Years Ago for the end of November, start of December, 1920, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:


    Six men were arrested this week for possession of 30 gallons of moonshine whiskey. Two of the men were farmers near Windsor, where the whiskey barrels were buried in a plowed field. The illegal whiskey possessors were uncovered by a sheriff's deputy, working undercover.

    The National Reform Association wants laws passed that Sundays will be changed in the future. They don't want any businesses to open on Sundays, no train service, no newspapers, no movies or theaters should open, and no use of automobiles for pleasure or business purposes. Several Greeley ministers have openly opposed the suggestions.

    A Weld County pioneer, Mrs. Oscar Ennes, passed away this week at her home in Greeley. She was born in 1840, and in 1860, she and her husband settled on a farm near Kersey.

    "Rocable," a Holstein cow owed by W.A. Purvis of Johnstown is the state's leading cow in the past month. Over 31 days, Rocable produced 80 pounds of butterfat, the most of any cow in the state.

    Because of so many phone requests, the city of New York will likely have more than a million telephones by the end of next year.

    President-elect Warren G. Harding stopped his frequent golf games this week to take a ship through the Panama Canal. The much-used canal may be removed, and Harding knows how important it is to American ships.

    The Masquerade Dance in Briggsdale Saturday night was much enjoyed. Only about half the couples wore masks, but the dance was enjoyed by all. The dance, held every two weeks, is about the only enjoyment in Briggsdale for old and young alike.

    The mystery of the missing hats for the Park Merchandise Store was solved this week. The hats, which were delivered in a sealed wooden box, sat outside the store in the alley for several days, and were finally picked up by a local resident because he thought the box was trash and empty. After 18 months, he discovered the large number of hats in the box, valued at $500. He returned the box to the police this week.

    Homeless men in Greeley have been sneaking into the unlocked doors of businesses here to sleep for the night. They are now being allowed to sleep overnight in the jail. Officers checking the doors of businesses in Greeley found 27 unlocked doors.

    A farmer in Peckham was arrested for ignoring the Compulsory Education Bill, and he is now out of jail on bond. He was fined $100 for not allowing his children to attend school.
