Canada / US Border Now Closed to Essential Workers

    Vent/Frustration

My husband is classified an essential worker in Canada because his company owns a plant in Windsor, Ontario. This morning he was refused entry to Canada. All travel to Canada by essential workers is closed. You won't be hearing this on the news, because I looked to find anything on this.

While in the customs office, there were also truck drivers waiting for clearance on their loads. The unofficial word is that the government of Canada is going to also restrict trade between the two countries, meaning what? Does this means on manufactured goods? Food? What exactly? And why is this going on? I mean, we know it's all about control and creating fear. But what is Trudeau trying to do and destroy?

How bizarre, and you're right I couldn't find a thing about it on the news yet. Does it involve all border crossings or just the Detroit Windsor area?

It would have to be all crossings. It wouldn't make sense if he could drive to another crossing to get over without encountering the same thing.

He had to go into the office which is very unusual. The customs agent he dealt with specifically mentioned "Trudeau" - not the premier of Ontario, or anyone else. Border crossings are federal jurisdiction anyhow.

He's been going over every two weeks or so without issue. I mean, he's got his letters and documentation and passport and all. No one at the Canadian office even knew about this. It was a big surprise. Everything is going to come to a screeching halt.

    For security no doubt.

Sorry to hear this, Muriel. It sounds so sudden and arbitrary. And it affects your family's ability to function in a normal fashion.

I understand that the Canadian-US border is closed to non-essential travel due to Covid-19, but my understanding was that "essential workers" are exempt. I'm guessing someone is tinkering with the definition of "essential" but they really need to be open about the process.

    Yes, it was sudden.

I think essential will be food... most of Canada's fresh food (produce) comes from the U.S. However, there is a great deal of cross-border manufacturing trade that goes on to support the automotive industry. Is that going to come to a screeching halt?

I have no idea what Trudeau is up to - flexing his muscle? For what purpose?

He and Whitmer are "kissing cousins".
