Thread: Why do we have hurricanes?

  1. #1

    Why do we have hurricanes?

Hurricanes serve a great purpose in controlling the global climate! They serve as a radiator for equatorial heat to distribute that heat towards the northern and southern hemispheres. Without hurricanes our tropical regions would overheat, destroying the primary rain forests which produce a major portion of our atmospheric oxygen and as a carbon sink to limit the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The northern and southern hemispheres would be much colder during the prime growing seasons causing crop failures and global starvation.

Secondly, hurricanes provide up to 30% of our annual fresh water influx in the US alone each year. Without that water our populations would be limited, crops would fail and basically our entire ecosystem would collapse.

So, is it good to pray away the hurricanes? Absolutely not! God placed them here for a purpose and never ever told anyone to live in a hurricane-prone area.

    Interesting info and science

If you had a position of influence would you recommend that communities leave and relocate to safer areas. Isn't most of Florida a hurricane zone?

They sure help us up here on the 45th parallel when a hurricane comes into the gulf. Crops get a good drenching and lake levels rise (though we surely don't need the increase this year). Our Great Lakes are at crazy high levels.

Too late and too expensive to relocate but steps could be taken to lessen the impact of storms to those in the typical paths. In the 1900 Galveston Hurricane, it killed between 8000-12000 citizens. Over the next 10 years, they built a curved seawall that covered most of the island to a height of 18 feet. They then raised the remaining buildings and pumped a slurry of ocean bottoms onto the island to match the height of the sea wall and graded it down to the bay on the backside of the island. Since then Galveston has been hit numerous times with only slight death and destruction. Most areas can do other things that would blunt the effect of storms yet no one thinks long term. They simply want to get over the last one and hope there is not another.

I'll continue to rebuke hurricanes as they approach Florida, once they hit the Gulf, I'll turn it over to you.

Hurricanes are not mentioned in the bible, the closest you'll get are things like "violent waves", "mighty tempests", etc. In some cases where lives were endangered the Lord did intervene. We see here that the Lord actually sent a tempest in order to capture Jonahs full attention..

Jonah 1:4 But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

Once Jonah was delivered into the sea to be swallowed up by a whale the Lord relented and the "mighty tempest" subsided.

Jonah 1:15: So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.

We can also see from ...

Matthew 8:24-27 And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him! ...

that Jesus rebuked winds and waves that were life threatening.

We don't need cat 5 hurricanes to maintain lakes, aquifers and temperatures, aggressive but not life threatening storms would do the job just fine. BTW, most "hurricanes" are pretty much media hype. If you go to the actual weather stations and get the wind data, you'll see how much the media lies about them. Next time one pops up we'll follow along.

They would not be mentioned in the Bible since the Bible is a middle eastern viewpoint set of writings. Hurricanes only happen in the Atlantic and Pacific basins which neither affect the Mesopotamian valley. Secondly, storms can weaken and strengthen very quickly as they approach the shore. I have lived through some of the most violent hurricanes of the last 40 years and can speak from experience. I went through Harvey, Ike, Katrina, Andrew, Elena, Agness, Rita, I was in the Gulf of Mexico during 2 of these storms and had to ride them out in a boat so I think I can speak with some authority on the subject.
As to your last statement, what I posted is a matter of scientific fact!
