Bethel Church Casts out Demon of Racism with Wizard Staff and Incantations

    Quote...
Listeners of Bethel Church's Transformation Now series were treated with a sight not usually seen when prophetess Marlene Barrett, in a bid to end racism within Bethel and the Ekklesia movement, whipped out a wizard staff- a sure sign that some tomfoolery was afoot. There, on stage, she led Bill Johnson and others through a ritual incantation to cast out the demon of racism by prophetically reenacting a scene from Lord of The Rings. No joke.

There is a video on the link for the sceptical.

Technically they are using a staff which is mentioned in the Old Testament in relation to miracles. Or a rod, like Moses used when he proclaimed that miracles would happen. Che Anh makes the declaration at the end of the video by stating "in Jesus' mighty name" which makes it very much a Christian declaration.

The reference to "Lord of the Rings" is interesting. Tolkien was a Christian author and he wrote fantasy books. The book in question involves a war between forces aligned with the Creator who is good and forces aligned with the evil Sauron, a created being. Gandalf is unambiguously on the side of the Creator and working for him. He's called a wizard and he doesn't relate to Jesus but this is a fantasy book, it's not taking place in the real world.

The Lord of the rings works as a metaphor for spiritual realities but I think they are taking it too far when they employ it directly. It's too easy to associate the staff being wielded with a wizard's staff and therefore witches and magic - even though the declaration itself is clearly Christian. And the employment of a staff or rod is very Old Testament oriented.

The content of the declaration, apart from it being in Jesus' name against the forces of evil, seems sound enough to me. So this is about technicalities.

Why don't you discuss the topic you brought up instead ?

The same pain us Charismatics feel when others try to pick apart everything they come across they don't agree with?

We had someone claiming to be a "prophetess" supported by someone calming to be an "Apostle" claiming to do "very powerful and prophetic act" that can "only be released by an apostolic decree".

And what is that? A reenactment from a Fantasy story of a wizard facing a demon. Supposedly this reenactment, plus oil on one's door for some reason, something to do with "so that the spirit of racism can leave your house".

And you say "seems sound enough to me".

    No wonder Jesus wept.

It happens, but if you can support it Biblically you're OK.

    If you can't ....

I was talking about the content which involved distancing oneself from racism whether one has participated or been a victim.

I don't know where Che Anh gets his idea that such a decree can only be made by an apostle. I doubt that he can find that in the Bible. That's a small detail though. How do you know they aren't apostles or prophets ? Do you accept it when preachers term themselves pastors, teachers, evangelists ? I just listed the five ministry gifts found in the New Testament.

Like you I don't know exactly what they are referring to when they talk about oiling doors. Instead of condemning or showing contempt for that which I don't understand I'll take a guess as to what it means instead. Blood was put on doorposts before the Exodus and the destroying angel passed those households by :

Exod 12:7 And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat it.

And oil is typically representative of the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

I'm sure that if you email them and ask what "oiling your door" is supposed to mean then they will give you a good answer. That's a better idea than flailing at every detail that you don't understand, on this forum.
