Thread: Mask Question

    Mask Question

The other day I saw a guy turned away from the store I was in because he wouldn't put on a mask. He was quite belligerent about it. I doubt he was a Christian. But it got me to wondering, since I know some Christians are pretty strongly anti-mask, isn't the right thing to do is honor the "weaker brother" who is pro-mask by wearing one yourself in his presence? It seems some Christians are almost prideful about being anti-mask. Is that really the Christ-like attitude? Even if you're technically right and wearing a mask does no good, can't you, for the sake of your brother, wear a mask anyway? Consider 1 Corinthians 8:9-13.

Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak. For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol's temple, won't that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols? So this weak brother or sister, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge. When you sin against them in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ.

Substitute the mask issue for the meat issue and isn't the principle the same?

I'm not anti-mask but when in some of our stores and see cashiers without them I will remove it. I wear a bandana.

Also, as per Romans 13, aren't we supposed to follow "the governing authorities", unless doing so would violate a commandment? While I can understand not wanting to wear a mask because it's uncomfortable, hides the face, and may not work, wearing one certainly doesn't go against any commandments. I think a lot of people just don't like being told what to do.

Sounds like foolish pride to me. As you say, this isn't a Scriptural matter.

Alameda, Santa Clara, SF counties are strict (where I live). Of course, we are densely populated. They are not letting you in the door without a mask. I was just in 3 states this week. Dallas and Florida were very relaxed. Less & less people are wearing them. I saw more people wearing them in south Louisiana but not like CA. It wasn't mandatory anywhere I went.
Of course, Oregon & California are about the same politically.

Demographics, and unfortunately, politics plays into it.
I, personally only wear a mask when I'm in a place I have to. And as soon as I leave, it's off.

In the meantime, I think it's foolishness because very few wear a proper mask, or wear a mask the proper way. It's a joke, it really is.

So, here in CA, we'll be wearing them for some time, and I'll continue to because it's required and if it makes someone feel better.. ok.

I'm actually more concerned about the contact tracking. that's scary stuff and it's coming to us asap.

Thing is, we have received so much confusing information about masks. We are living in a time of full tilt bewitchment, first we hear that masks don't serve any purpose except for health care workers, that in and of itself is a self-contradictory position. Then we hear that masks can work, but ONLY N95 masks, that clothe masks don't work at all, then we hear that clothe masks can work, then we are told to wear masks. It seems like confusion is the goal.

I think the spiritual question should be "WHO HAS BEWITCHED YOU".

But to the mask question, when going out I just put on a neck sleeve thing, it goes up and down depending on the environment.

We switched to bandanas recently, instead of masks. There are stores that you can see everyone is "compliant" - cashiers and customers. And then there are stores and other places where there is very relaxed compliance.

    Yes, it's entirely confusing.

I wear a mask to gain entrance. I remove said mask/bandana to breathe when I'm in the environment simply because it's gross and unhealthy to have to breathe carbon dioxide instead of oxygen. The local post office had mandatory mask requirement, and a very long line. By the time I was halfway through the line I was dizzy and having a hard time breathing. I lifted the mask off my face and surrepticiously as I could just to get some fresh air.

As many examples as there are about obeying the government in the Bible, I see examples of civil disobedience as well:

    Daniel 3 - Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego
    Daniel 6 - Daniel
David went raiding when he was living in Philistine territory (sorry I don't have the reference). The Philistines thought he was raiding Philistine enemies, but David was in fact raiding the enemies of Judah.
Peter - Peter was told by the governing authorities not to preach Jesus of Nazareth yet he and the other apostles continued
    Paul - numerous examples
    John - numerous examples

Yes, I see that this could be seen as a different matter altogether, but I see where civil disobedience in the face of tyranny may be the only way forward.
