White House worried about rapid spike in Detroit coronavirus cases

DETROIT — Michigan's coronavirus outbreak is spreading so fast in Detroit that it's worrying federal officials, and the Rev. Horace Sheffield III fears he may know one of the reasons.

"Quite frankly, I think too many were not taking enough precautions,'' and "still gathering" in public and ignoring pleas to stay home as recently as last week, Sheffield, 65, told Bridge on Thursday.

The pastor and civil-rights activist tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday and is self-quarantining at home. One of at least 851 city residents to test positive for the coronavirus — about a third of the total in all of Michigan — Sheffield is the latest in a series of prominent Detroiters to get the illness.

Thursday alone, Sheffield, state Rep. Tyrone Carter and the family of Hilton Napoleon, police chief of the Detroit enclave of Highland Park, went public with positive tests. Earlier this week, community leader Marlowe Stoudamire and Wayne County Sheriff Commander Donafay Collins died of the virus, while nearly 400 Detroit police officers and 21 firefighters are quarantined because of it...

Not sure why but Detroit seems to be taking a hit. This video is from an ER nurse at a large well respected hospital. The video is only 6 minutes long and its worth listening to the whole thing, but if you want to skip to the 2:30 mark thats were things get intense.

That sounds like criminal negligence on the part of the hospital admin, most likely it's white collar criminals running it. They'd be better off just closing it down.

I'm only guessing here.. could it be the same reason New Orleans is spreading C-19 like wild fire? I've seen several videos of people partying in the streets, dancing, music blasting, hair and nail salons on every corner open for business. Just unbelievable. Also, a lot of churches in Detroit (as well as the Deep South) have been stubborn about closing. I heard COGIC lost 8 Bishops in a 2 week period in Detroit metro.

I read today that Michigan has passed up California.

It is a well respected hospital in Metro Detroit. The problem has been that it seems the virus started early here and there have been a lot of patients coupled with a shortage of the proper medical supplies for healthcare workers.

We have even lost nurses to the virus. This is one of those sad stories...

Hopefully someone gets some supplies over there pronto, their situation is absurd.

"When our employees develop COVID-19 symptoms, we treat them just as we would any patient. We assess their health and determine whether they should be tested for the virus."
I would wish they would care more for those in the first line. They are risking their health and their lives.

Right, my family doctor is affiliated with them so I am familiar with Ascension.

As to the supply shortage it wasn't just that hospital, it was happening to every hospital in the area. There was a sudden surge in the numbers of people becoming ill that overwhelmed the area's healthcare systems.

The good news is that the community stepped up and donations started pouring in from individuals as well as corporations.
