Canada's biggest newspaper says Prince Harry and Meghan Markle aren't welcome

-Canada's largest newspaper says Prince Harry and Meghan Markle aren't welcome to live in the famously friendly country because it's unconstitutional.

In a scathing editorial, The Globe and Mail says the royal couple's plan to move to the land of maple syrup and hockey violates laws that keep the once-British-ruled country at arm's length from their mother monarchy across the pond.

"In response to the sudden announcement of a vague and evolving plan for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex – Prince Harry and Meghan – to move to Canada while remaining part of the Royal Family, the Trudeau government's response should be simple and succinct: No," the editorial blasts.

"You are welcome to visit, but so long as you are senior royals, Canada cannot allow you to come to stay ... It breaks an unspoken constitutional taboo," it says.

"A royal living in this country does not accord with the long-standing nature of the relationship between Canada and Britain, and Canada and the Crown."

The royals' plan — which includes stepping down from their titles and dividing their time between L.A. and Canada — also stomps on Canada's identity, it notes.

The country broke away from British reign centuries ago, considers Queen Elizabeth II a figurehead leader only, and allows few of her reps to have duties.

"Though Canada borrowed from Britain, it isn't Britain and never was. And this country long ago took steps to make that unmistakably clear," the editorial states.

"If you're a senior member of our Royal Family, this country cannot become your home."

The Globe and Mail newspaper is printed in five major cities and is widely regarded as Canada's "newspaper of record...

So what's this all about? I see the stories, and just perusing the titles, it seems like basically liberal Meghan went over there and started throwing around her liberal ideas and such and is brain washing her husband with her stuff?

I could be totally wrong but that's how it seems to read.

I want to hear what AJ thinks about all this...but how it's looking Meghan says it was too much stress for her to be in the public eye so much but she's an actress so she should be used to it, so there must be more to it.

I haven't read or heard that much about it, even though it's been on the news every day. The biggest issue seemed to be their stepping away from royal duties and being financially independent, and of course, they made it sound like the Queen was very upset and rattled by it all. One of the biggest issues for Canadians seems to be who will pick up the tab for security for them if they live in Canada. But Trudeau throws our money around so easily, what's another $500M???

This article is the first I've seen that says they shouldn't be allowed residency. Not a whisper of it on MSM.
This is more along the lines of what we see, and that right now, Meghan is in Vancouver, making stops.

This was her 2nd drop in and there's a link in the article to her first one, a women's shelter.

Personally, I don't blame her for wanting out of the formality of Royal life and duties but she's making appearances already? We seriously don't need them living here. If they wanted to live a more ordinary life, then fine. Vancouver is the place to do it, but don't go looking for the spotlight before all the details are put in place.

Well the article above basically says it's 'against the law' so to speak for them to live in Canada.

Yeah... I get that, but the article in the OP is the first I've heard about this and I watch national news just about every day.

This statement - "Canada cannot allow you to come to stay ... It breaks an unspoken constitutional taboo," seems to say it all, and I don't have any idea how deep in the constitution it's buried. I posted the original editorial on FB but still have to see if there are any comments. Maybe some of my friends are more versed in constitutional details than me. (That wouldn't take much.)

This is the original editorial (and there isn't a comment section):

It was always going to end badly - Meghan wants the fame and adulation without the responsibility. Sadly Harry has capitulated to her agenda

I think she wants to move to California. I am just an observer.

It ain't all Meagan's fault...Harry has always been the "different" one, as opposed to William. He's more like his mama Diana I believe. From what I've heard and read, Meagan has been beat up severely in the British media, and Harry wasn't going to let them treat her like they treated his mother. I say good for them, they should be left alone to live their lives.
