Ex-Pope Benedict undercuts Francis on priests and celibacy
(CNN)Retired Pope Benedict has issued a passionate defense of priestly celibacy, saying he "cannot remain silent" as his successor Pope Francis considers easing the prohibition on married men serving as priests.
What has Benedict said?
Benedict made the comments in a book that he co-authored with Cardinal Robert Sarah, which will be released in France on Wednesday.
In the book, titled "From the Depths of Our Hearts," the 92-year-old pontiff argues in favor of the centuries-old tradition of celibacy within the church, defending the ability to "put oneself completely at the disposition of the Lord" as a criterion for those wishing to be ordained as priests.
"We can say: 'Silere non possum! I cannot remain silent!'" Benedict and Sarah wrote in a joint introduction to the book, according to excerpts released by French daily newspaper Le Figaro on Sunday.
Benedict also wrote that he believes celibacy carries "great significance" and is "truly essential" as a priest's path to God becomes the foundation of his life...

I think it was the day after Benedict abdicated from being pope that the rumor was presented in the media that the reason why was that he was part of a homosexual ring inside the Vatican. There's been a lot of stuff going on in Catholic circles under the guise of "celibacy".

Well, celibacy combined with 'not being married' is a good cover for being a homosexual.

In general the scandals involve anything except heterosexual relations. In previous times a lot of Catholic priests had "wives" that weren't sanctioned by the RCC but who were tolerated locally. But back then there were better incentives for becoming a priest, for instance to get out of abject poverty.

The apostle Paul warned about them who would forbid marriage. He also said that a man should marry rather than to burn with passion. Wonder how many altar boys would have been spared from being molested or raped if the catholic church would have not went the celibacy route?
Norvel Hayes said that this is what happened to Rock Hudson when he was 8.

My impression is that heterosexual relations including rape isn't an unusually large problem among Catholic priests. The ones that engage in stuff like homosexuality or pedophilia are more likely to not be interested in adult women.

I think the devil has convinced them that they can have their lust fulfilled this way without risk of someone showing up pregnant. Either way, they are sadly mistaken with this doctrine of forbidding marriage.

Forbidding it specifically for priests is perhaps even dumber, in some sense. First there is alienation from the rest of the population then there's the extra temptation for those who are genuinely called (just not for that). It all started with the virgin(ity) worship that crept in early on.

Isn't the words of Scripture "those forbidding to marry" having ANY kind of influence in Rome?? This is a rhetorical statement, by the way.
This forbidding has done more damage than any will know. The RCC is so good at public posturing yet so inept at at holy living in secret places. Soon enough the secret things will be shouted from the housetops.

At the same time it's not uncommon for the same kind of things to happen in organizations that aren't like that at all. Think of the recent pedophilia scandal involving the boy scouts. That was huge. It would seem that pedophilia is much more common than one would think, it's just that it's both illegal and also completely socially unacceptable - at the moment at least. Which doesn't seem to deter a lot of people from doing it in secret.
