Super strict on dress code and divorce. Most of the churches are small and in the Appalachian area. Some fellowship with a larger group who do not practice snake handling but respect it. Interesting people no doubt. Some day I would love to tour the hill country of W Virginia and Virginia with the focus of visiting small Pentecostal churches and communities...but would leave a Firebrand sized hole in the wall if they brought out snakes or drinking arsenic.

I don't think I've heard of that before. Do they drink a lethal dose worth or just a taste of it, and what have been the aftermaths?

I remember as a kid going to a rattlesnake 'farm' and the guy saying you could drink rattlesnake poison because of how it works. Don't quote me on this, but something like it works by being injected into the bloodstream, not through digestion. He said if you had cavities or somewhere the poison could enter the bloodstream, they one would die from drinking it. But just drinking it wouldn't kill you. Now whether that's the truth or not I don't know, but that's what he said. I guess a Google would find the answer.

Edit: Poisons are substances that are toxic (cause harm) if swallowed or inhaled. Venoms are generally not toxic if swallowed, and must be injected under the skin (by snakes, spiders, etc.) into the tissues that are normally protected by skin in order to be toxic. However, we do NOT recommend drinking venom!

So it is true. So that isn't really a 'miracle' that they do that.

2nd edit: I just saw you said arsenic, not snake venom. Never mind.

Yes they drink poison and some of them kiss the serpents on the lips. Absolutely nuts.

They are very mistrusting of outsiders. I'm not totally sure why but I wish I knew. They're ok with me because I have some connections, but if I walked into a church without knowing someone, they would probably just stare.

I suspect they wouldnt see too many visitors coming through. Still, it remains a bucket list kind of thing.

There was a John Stossel report on this subject back in the 1980's. He was giving the info on the poison type and content but that's all I recall. It was like a 20/20 report or something. It was all at once fascinating and offensive (for the sensationalizing of it, though not that bad).

    I think I remember that.
