High taxes leads to a little rebellion now and then. This we know.
The Finns might have an entirely different mindset. Meaning that they are happy even though they know exactly what their taxation levels are.

Come on. You go into detailed examinations and breakdowns of posts here and offer all these thoughts, and you really have no idea what high taxes would have to do with someone's happiness?

I'm not discussing my personal opinion about taxation, I merely pointed out that the average Finn might see that very differently from most posters here. Meaning that they are happy with what they get in return which is almost certainly more than what Americans got in return for paying taxes to the king of England. You may disagree strongly with the Finns but that doesn't have anything to do with their being happy with Finnish taxes. If they are happy with it then they are.

From what I've read, they're generally happy with the social contract they've established,
which provides for a strong public sector in exchange for high personal tax rates.

And based on the happiness survey cited above, they're generally more happy than
    Americans.

Everyone agrees that some level of taxation produces a better society with more happiness than no taxation at all does. Which level of taxation is the optimal one is highly debatable. Fundamental attitudes and what people are used to when it comes to taxation may govern their happiness levels a lot more than the taxation level itself. If Finnish taxation levels had suddenly been imposed upon Americans (not just njtom but all Americans) and American taxation levels suddenly upon Finns (with the corresponding slimmed down welfare system) then both groups would have become extremely unhappy, on average. Which proves nothing about either taxation level in and of itself.

Finland's population is 5.5 million. It's far easier to work out a economic system compared to any nation over 100 million

An influx of 20 million will stir things up

Seriously. The USA dwarfs Finland in terms of general pop. Go to LA and poll everybody to see how they are doing with happiness. At rush hour.

Kalifornia is in dire need of tax dollars and looking through every piece of minutae for something they can tax that hasnt yet been levied.

Meaning who is 'everyone' as in 'everyone agrees...' You and the mouse in your pocket? I'm sure 'everyone' doesn't agree with your statement. I know a lot of people that think of taxes as 'legalized stealing'.
