Mega millions: This florida 20-year-old 'retired' after winning $451 million jackpot

A 20-year-old Florida man said he hopes to "do some good for humanity" after winning the $451 Mega Millions jackpot. Shane Missler bagged the prize last Saturday, when he drew five winning numbers and the "mega ball" to claim the fourth largest prize in Mega Millions history.

"Oh. My. God," he wrote on Facebook on January 5 after learning of his win.

He has chosen to claim the prize in a $281.2 million lump sum payout, rather than several payments over a period of years.

He told the Florida Lottery he intends to use his newfound wealth to buy a new home in Tampa, pursue a "variety of passions," and help others.

"I intend to take care of my family, have some fun along the way, and cement a path for financial success so that I can leave a legacy far into the future," Missler said in a statement. "I have always been one to encourage the idea of chasing dreams and I believe life is about the pursuit of passion. I am 20 years old and my journey has only just begun."

Missler, who has "retired" from his job as a background screening worker, said the first person he told about his good fortune shortly after seeing his numbers come up was his brother. The following morning he said he broke the news of the win to his father over a cup of coffee.

The winner told Lottery organizers he believed in the power of a positive thinking and that the win had not come entirely as a surprise. He said he had "a feeling" that he might be fortunate.

"The power of positive thinking should not be underestimated!" he tweeted on January 7.

Missler tweeted a photo of a book by businessman Gary Vaynerchuk which he gives the "thumbs up", and added: "Young entrepreneur in the making."

I don't get these people who win and reveal it immediately. I'd hire a financial team, a lawyer, etc, get it all set up in a trust, probably move, etc, etc, etc. Get prepared for the bombardment that's going to come your way and deal with all the things that pertain to my money and get it safe first.

He's 20 years old, he knows everything...it'll be interesting to see whats happened with him in the next 5 years.

Check out his FB page...lots of hits for money but some good advice too. I like this one:

    Exactly.

But I remember this older woman that won a big one not too long ago. It was somewhere in the northeast I think, maybe NY, and there she is a day or 2 after winning up there on the podium.

If I even wasted my money playing the l;lottery and won I would tell absolutely no one. I would do exactly what Fuego suggested, with exception of the lawyer unless I find one that is a seriously born again Christian because most lawyers are thieves.

I wouldn't even tell my Hubby, because he'd "accidentally leak it" and I'd be soooo ticked off.

Some lotteries require that you reveal your identity to the public.

Exactly! Youth is wasted on the young.
When your praise match your prayers, the answer will come.

That's true. I think Power Ball requires it.

I think it may be a state thing. GA does. I have a friend in OH that says they don't have to there.

Edit: Found this after I wrote that:

California is among the majority of states that compel lottery winners to be publicly identified if they want to collect their cash. Six states — Delaware, Kansas, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio and South Carolina — allow winners to remain anonymous.

You can forget about unexpected repair costs with an extended service contract for your Saab. Many vehicle repairs can cost thousands of dollars in unexpected expense, now may be the time to consider an extended service plan for your vehicle.
