OREGON – Just the thought of pumping their own gas has sent some Oregonians into full freakout mode.

Thanks to a new law that took effect Monday, residents in some rural Oregon counties will soon be allowed to pump their own gas. Aside from that exception, Oregon and New Jersey are the only states that do not allow drivers to fill up their own tanks.

Oregon House Bill 2482 was passed in May and allows people living in Oregon counties with 40,000 residents or less to pump their own petrol.

It wasn't until Medford, Oregon TV station KTVL posted about the new law on social media that the rest of the country learned just how freaked out some Oregonians are at the mere thought of pumping gas.

Here's a sampling of the panicked comments:

...Some gas station managers told The Bend Bulletin that employees would continue delivering the same full-service treatment that customers have come to expect since self-service gas was banned in 1951.

"Our regular, longtime customers love coming here and talking to us while we pump their gas," Shelby Perkins, a cashier at a 76 gas station in Prineville, told the paper.

Perkins told the Bulletin it was quite possible that the local drivers had no idea how to use a gas pump.

Other managers said they would have employees on hand to teach drivers how to pump their gas.

Fortunately it doesn't affect my county in Oregon. I like having someone else pump my gas. Especially in our Oregon rain.

If a station is busy does it take a while for an employee to service all the customers? I know how to pump gas but I don't particularly like doing it especially in Michigan winters if the wind is whipping around you.

I didn't realize that anybody pumped gas for anyone anymore. I told someone about this and they said they think NJ still has people pump gas for you.

We still have a few gas stations that pump for you. I use a gas station where I get points towards grocery purchases, so I pump my own, even when the wind chill is -40something, like last week.

They mainly do in countries where the wages involved are extremely low compared to the price of the gasoline.

In the city where I live, there is exactly ONE gas station that offers full service.

Everywhere else is self serve only.

I remember full service, it really was nice...then it went to optional full service and there was a discount if I recall for self serve....the self serve became the norm many years ago...Like fuego, I had NO idea anyone still offered it...

Yes, New Jersey still prohibits self-service at gasoline stations. Polls show that most voters don't want self-service, and many feel strongly about it. Personally speaking, I enjoy the human interaction with the attendant, but there are also times when I'd prefer to do it myself in order to save a few minutes.

In India most here would be able to afford having 3 or 4 servants hanging around the house most of the time. A butler, a cook, a housemaid, a secretary. Something like that.
