Usually the police, when they stop a car, ask the very first thing for your Driver's License and Insurance Card. Naturally you immediately reach for your DL and IC. But even though they ask, they really don't want you to comply immediately. That is crazy! Police need to review their initial communication. Make it very clear.

Drivers also need to be firmly advised that when they are pulled over, they need to turn the engine off and place both hands on the steering wheel, until the Police asks for their I.D. or other information...

...That way, they can (hopefully) avoid any misunderstanding as to why they are reaching for something or going in the glove compartment.

How much of this could be avoided just by doing what you said? Hands in plain sight on the wheel goes a long way to diffusing a situation with a cop that is already tense never knowing what is going to happen when he approaches a vehicle.

The problem is you have too many stubborn people that just won't listen. They gotta do their own thing.

True but in this case Castile was right to declare he had a gun....the mistake in this case was clearly a lack of communication/understanding.

When Castile moved the office did not say 'don't move', he said 'don't reach for the gun'.

Castile responded he wasn't and kept moving...when the officer said 'don't reach for the gun' and drew his Castile should have FROZEN until the communications were clear...it was a failure all around and seems to point that the officer was poorly trained...IMHO.

He should have said, 'Do not move...where is the gun?' At that point probably asking him to exit the car...

I noticed that too...calm..just kept reiterating what took place...but it's possible that control in a crisis that kicks in at the moment explains it...and then one breaks down later....

Did anyone ever hear where the gun was located?
