To the metro Detroiters here, familiar with Detroit World Outreach..

Their pastor, Bishop Ben Gibert, passed away today...a friend posted the news on FB. Apparently he was ill, because from what my friend said, he fought a good fight...

Ben Gibert took over as pastor of Detroit World Outreach in 2005, after the death of the founding pastor, Bishop Jack Wallace.

WOW!!! My cousins have been members there for years! So sad! Wow! He wasn't old either.

My cousin invited me there once for their Convocation. E.B. White was guest speaker. By that time the congregation was about 90% black. A lot of the white members left when Wallace died and Gibert became pastor. We (WORD OF FAITH) used to share the building with the Church before Wallace. That's Woffie's old church.

Yeah, I wasn't ready for this news yesterday... I visited a few times when Bishop Wallace was there.

Wow...that is surprising! I had gone there on occasion in the past and remembered the shock when Jack Wallace suddenly passed. As Val said I don't think he was that old.

My cousins are in deep sadness. I can understand though. It's the same as a close family member passing. The younger cousin was approached by bishop Gibert when she visited the church years ago and prophetically told her she was suppose to be Choir Director there. He'd never met her, but knew the Lord directed him to her. I think she's taking it the hardest.

DWO reminded me a little of Victory Christian (Tulsa), when Bishop Wallace was there...the praise and worship especially (although VCC didn't have praise dancers, DWO did at the time, plus, like you said, a lot of white members back then too)..I haven't visited there since Bishop Gibert took over as pastor, so I don't know anything much about the church itself now. There was some controversy a few years ago re: Gibert and his wealth (I remember something about his home, people being up in arms over it, but I guess it just blew over after awhile). I do remember something Gibert did at the tithe/offering time, he would have everyone bring their tithes and offerings to the altar, and he would have them pray over them. Kinda struck me as strange at the time, but that's what the Lord had him to do...

    Exclamation

Lorrie, I just read his Obit (Pye Funeral Home), he was only 52! I saw a recent photo of him, and would've guessed him at maybe 62-65, at least closer to my age.
