Northern Suicide Crisis
Northern Suicide Crisis: A fifth girl takes her own life
Jeanelle Mandes | October 28, 2016
As various levels of government talk about how to deal with the suicide crisis in Northern Saskatchewan, another child has taken her life.
That's now five children in four weeks who have committed suicide. The community of Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation, also known as Loon Lake, is mourning the loss of their 13-year-old band member.
Shakira Crookedneck is amongst four other girls who suddenly ended their lives – one from Deschambault Lake, two young girls from Stanley Mission, and the other from Lac La Ronge – all aged 10 to 14 years old.

Makwa/Loon Lake is only about 3 hours east and slightly north of where I live. I have relatives in the Lac La Ronge and Stanley Mission areas.
The suicide rates are skyrocketing among the young people on reserves.

Suicide is a problem among US Native Americans as well.

Research suggests that a genetic disposition to alcoholism and a lack of jobs and opportunity creates hopelessness which increases suicide rates. The demonic involves itself with stuff like that of course.

There are many factors.
Some northern First Nations communities are nearly third world living conditions. The ones named in this article aren't that bad, but the Native spirituality is strong, alcohol, drug abuse and huffing gasoline and various sprays for a high are rampant. One of the largest factors is that many of the parents and grand parents were taken away to Residential Schools where they were terribly abused and the link of family and parenting were broken.
We've had some evangelists come into these communities to try to give them hope, but without ongoing counseling and good strong Christian leadership to do followup, it's just a temporary band aide.

It can be difficult to gauge to which degree spirituality is involved. With some it amounts to traditionalism kind of like when westerners put out milk and cookies to Santa. They do something like what their ancestors did but it means very little. With others the traditionalism isn't strong in an upfront way but they are steeped in superstition and if they are nominally Christian, in syncretism. They can be open to the demonic without actively engaging it.
