    Well done Michigan...well done.

    1. Michigan

Far too much of the Michigan narrative centers on Detroit and its many issues. The Motor City’s become a scrappily rising underdog you can’t help but root for, but Michigan’s greatest strengths lie in the state as a whole. Did you know Michigan has more coastline than any state other than Alaska? Did you know it has such an embarrassment of beer riches that you can easily hit Bell’s and Founders in the same afternoon? Did you know the UP is so remote and uniquely beautiful that it almost feels like a secret 51st state where they inexplicably love British meat pies? Did you know most residents are more than happy to apologize for Kid Rock? If you answered yes to at least three of these than you already understand Michigan’s charms. If you answered no to these questions, you should listen to the dulcet tones of Michigan tourism pitchman Tim Allen and get yourself there immediately.

Points for onion burgers, Color Me Badd, Louis L’Amour's later works, that flirtatious minx Ado Annie Carnes from the musical Oklahoma!, the first shopping cart, 2007 Wes Welker, and that one song from Cross Canadian Ragweed that they don’t play anymore. Negative infinity points for Skip Bayless.

Onion burgers are yummy!!!!! First you throw a handful (not a patty) of ground beef on the grill. Then, you slap it a couple of times with the spatula to flatten it. Let it cook a bit. Turn it over and add a generous handful of thinly sliced onion on top. Slap it a couple more times with the spatula. Cook some more. Place on warm bun and top the onions with 2 or 3 dill slices. Customer should slather on some mustard. Eat. About halfway through eating, order 1 or two more burgers.

Most of the onion burger eateries are really old and in small towns. The one where we used to eat often was a small diner style and only had about 12 stools and no tables. The cook took your order and kept it in his head. Usually a kid (about 13 yr old) served the drinks and wiped the counter. When you were ready to pay, the cook looked at the number of plates you had and recited your order and told you the price. Most onion burger eateries also serve Coneys. During busy hours, customers stood around the walls and waited for a stool. I think these eateries date back to the 1930's or 40's. We quit eating there when MrC gave up beef and pork.

That is sooo cool and I really enjoyed your descriptions! Why did MrC give up beef and pork tho, did he become a vegetarian?

You got me really curious about them now so I did a little search and came up with this...I may have to try making one on my own:

No, he didn't become vegetarian. He eats poultry and fish.

I've never been to Tucker's. We always ate in El Reno, mostly at Robert's Grill. We used to have a burger joint in OKC called Big Ed's that served a good onion burger. We used to eat there now and then.
