Thumbs up Church Revokes 92-Year-Old Woman's Membership for Not Tithing

    Nope....not a parody. If only.

A 92-year-old Alabama woman will no longer be considered a member church at the church she attended for over 50 years because she was not tithing.

Local news station kctv5.com reports Josephine King had held membership at First African Baptist Church in Bainbridge for most of her life. King will now be forced to worship elsewhere after Senior Pastor Derrick Mike sent a letter revoking her membership.

The letter read, "Josephine King is no longer considered a member of the First African Baptist Church of Bainbridge, Georgia."

It went on that King "has shown non-support" of the church regarding "constant and consistent financial and physical participation."

King's nephew, Gerald Simmons, said the real reason that his aunt was cut off from the church was that she was not tithing. The "physical participation" referred to a time when King was sick for several months and considered a shut-in.

Simmons said King was "stunned" by the church's decision to cancel her membership.

"You shouldn't chase the individuals down. You shouldn't do that. If that's the case, you're money hungry," Simmons said.

"You have to have money to make these churches run, but it's not about money. It's about God. You have to put God first."

There was a similar story a few weeks back, about another church sending a letter to a young woman telling her she had to give a certain amount, or else she would be removed from the church roll...I don't understand what's going on with these so-called churches.

In Matt 23:23 Jesus said that tithing is good. But he makes it clear that it is not the dominate doctrine of the church because there are more important issues in the Word of God such as judgment, God's mercy and grace, and faith. He's saying they should actually teach on both, but one is weightier than the other.

This church is out of line. One wonders what else they are teaching.

I agree with Nikos...with one caveat..but let me be perfectly clear...this church WAS OUT OF LINE spiritually...

BUT keeping our commitments is important character trait of the believer which is why we are advised to let our yeas be yeas and our nays be nays..

While the age of 92 and fixed income prompt sympathy I am reminded of the widow's mite and Jesus' response...

I personally don't believe 'joining a church' is scriptural to begin with...Our pastor does not even take membership. He says if you come more that 2 times you ARE a member..but there is no 'covenant agreement' made with that church...the covenant is with the Lord to follow His Spirit in obedience...period..IMHO

In some cases when someone joins a fellowship they are given some guidelines on membership and churches strong on tithing have that in the list..there is an expectation that you are agreeing with that belief and are committing to follow it..

She was 92 so I would wonder if that was something that was even done when she took fellowship with them...but if they are booting people's memberships as Nikos said, one has to wonder what else they are teaching...the scriptures speak of giving without compulsion and as I see it, that encompasses all giving including the tithe, IMHO. So while a fellowship should not use membership as a compulsion to tithe on the flip side of that someone should not take membership if they do, unless they intend to keep that commitment. God expects us to keep our commitments even if we make bad ones, or get ourselves released from it.
