    Who put down the elderly?

If what you described it the case, then that is fantastic!
But it's the exception rather than the rule and that's NOT a put down

Nah, they're just making room for younger members to try to liven things up in that dead old dried up church.

At that age she is probably a widow... what ever happened to taking care of the fatherless and widows???

The church I grew up in, and where most of my family and relatives attended for years, regularly looked after their sick and shut in...they would get visits from the pastors and deacons, prayer, Communion, and food/clothing if needed...leadership has changed from when I was there, but I have yet to hear about the church sending out some silly letter giving them the boot for not attending or tithing!

See, this is one of the things I so dislike about the "modern church"..lack of unity, an "it's all about me" spirit, and a lust for more and better, so you better send in your tithe or else we have no need of you.

One more thang...there is a HUGE difference between the "modern church" and The Bride of Christ. HUGE difference.

And as for the widow's mite, Jesus was not using her as an example of how we are to give. He had just rebuked the Pharisees for the doctrine they preached and how they devour windows houses., then he uses the window as an example of a widow's house they just devoured through their doctrine that would cause her to give all she had. She would be losing her house next because she didn't have any more money. Their doctrine about giving was eerily similar to the TV preachers today.

With all due respect, this just shows how tithing doctrine gives people the stupids when it comes to relationships and mercy and grace.
I am hearting you SO much right now!

Nikos.. yes, some of our Seniors are quick and sharper than some of the younger ones.. but, some are not. That needs to be taken into account.
My dad was one that went from a quick/sharp guy to confused and had difficulty understanding and remembering.. in a period of a few months.

I'm still just amazed that ANY establishment that purports to present Jesus to a community can do this.

I would be SO long gone.. never, ever to darken their door again.. AND, I'd make sure to tell everyone I know what happened.

I'm going to suppose that most of those churches do teach the singular tithing system even though they do not necessarily make paying that tithe (in full) the requirement for membership but rather some smaller number, whether they refer to that as a (minimal) "tithe" or something else.

I found some other news story where someone was denied a funeral because they hadn't payed tithes. At least that makes sense in terms of a funeral costing (extra) money.

Did anyone notice that the 92-year old woman from the OP was said to have payed more than her tithe previously, meaning she could have kept the money above the tithe and saved it for later tithes ? That way she could have kept with their requirements and she could still have payed less in total to that church than she has now. Do these people care about things like that ? I'd say probably not. All they care about is that someone is currently not keeping their law which then justifies acts of condemnation and alienation - which in turn instills a fear of the law in others that need to be kept in check. Lawmindedness and condemnation go hand in hand. There are plenty of Christian ministers out there who think of themselves as holy men and women of God and who are chock full of condemnation, elitism, factionism, haughtiness, mercilessness. And the spirit of fear.

I understood your point of view in the Creflo Dollar luxury jet thread because that was as much about that specific ministry as it was about the phenomenon itself but the church we are discussing here merely serves as an example of a phenomenon, noone cares about that specific church in and of itself. If by some infinitesimal chance that church would somehow manage to justify its actions by way of details we know nothing about, there will still be umpteen similar churches out there that are doing the same and who wouldn't be able to.
