Natalie Cole, the American singer who overcame battles with substance abuse and the long shadow of her famous father to earn worldwide success of her own, has died. She was 65.

Publicist Maureen O'Connor told The Associated Press Cole died Thursday night. O'Connor had no details about how or where Cole died.

The daughter of Nat "King" Cole built a chart-topping career with hits such as "This Will Be", "Inseparable" and "Our Love." She fought health problems for years and received a kidney transplant in 2009 after developing hepatitis.

Cole recently had to cancel planned tour stops, including one in Louisville, due to illness, according to WDRB.

Wow! How sad and so unexpected. She was a neat lady. I grew up listening to her father. My mother was NKC's biggest fan. Her talent will be missed!

It's kinda shocking when I hear of someone dying sometimes like this because it's been so long since I've heard of them and thought about them that I didn't how much time had passed. It's like 'where did the years go?'

    More details...

After struggling with drug addiction for years, Cole rebounded in the 80's and then released the groundbreaking album “Unforgettable...With Love” in 1991 using technology to record a virtual duet with her father singing his song “Unforgettable”.

Cole suffered from kidney complications resulting from Hepatitis C, which she said was contracted as a result of drug use. In 2009 she received a kidney transplant, but she reportedly suffered from health complications recently, forcing her to cancel numerous performances. Cole won nine Grammy Awards, and today other stars including Tony Bennett, Jordin Sparks, and Lenny Kravitz remembered Cole on social media, while her fans reacted to the news and paid tribute to the legend.

Cole is survived by her son, and today her family released a statement saying "Natalie fought a fierce, courageous battle, dying how she lived ... with dignity, strength and honor. Our beloved Mother and sister will be greatly missed and remain UNFORGETTABLE in our hearts forever."

I remember her having one in the past. I don't think she had a relapse (that I'm aware of).
It just caught up with her health wise.
