100 Years Ago: Grover man wins chicken selling contest – Greeley Tribune

100 Years Ago, for the third week of October 1922, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:

•Colorado State Representative E.C. Abbey was a visitor in Greeley this week and told the Republicans they will be surprised by the large turnout of their voters for the upcoming election. He expects a strong win for all Republican candidates and the assembly workers are "humping themselves" for their candidates.

•Five Greeley hunters went into the mountains this week and came home with two two-horn deer. They said because of the number of hunters on the mountain, it was very dangerous. One hill they were one was covered with 40 hunters, shooting in all directions.

•Glenn Cowley is the Grover Poultry Club winner in a chicken selling contest. He sold 109 chickens at 75 cents each, for a profit of $41.99.

•The "Mystery Snake" that caused a huge disruption in the Wilson Grocery Store this week has been identified as a Boa Constrictor, and is not poisonous. It arrived in the store this week with a shipment of bananas. They apparently live in northern Mexico and use the banana crates as a means of invading America.

•Labeled the "Big Mac Booze Plant" was the largest distillery in America, and it was closed this week by the feds. It was located in a large tent, inside a grove of trees between Denver and Greeley, The owner of the property told the feds that he didn't know about it, and some secretly built it on his property. He was arrested and is in jail, awaiting his court date.

•The Balcom Seed Co. of Greeley is paying the highest price to farmers because of the shortage of pinto beans. They are now paying $6 per 100 pounds of beans.

•Skip Parsons, the town marshall of Milliken, and a friend were arrested Monday night by Fort Lupton police and were charged with drunkenness. Parson was very drunk and his friend was holding two pint bottles of booze. Both spent the night in the Fort Lupton Jail.

•When you're cleaning house, take a container of water, where tobacco has been soaking, and sprinkle it on the floors of your closets. This will keep the moths away.
