100 Years Ago: Habitual speeder fined $20 instead of $10 – Greeley Tribune

100 Years Ago, for the third week of August 1922, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:

18-year-old Clarence Smith was again charged with speeding in downtown Greeley. He has been charged several times for driving at the high speed of 35 mph. His fine was doubled this time to $20.

State Dry Agents heard a man had a lemon-aid stand in the Poudre Canyon, and was selling booze. One of the agents went to the stand and asked for a pint of whiskey. The suspect gave it to him and he paid for it with a marked bill. They arrested the suspect.

A small boy was riding his bicycle on 11th Avenue and 7th Street when he rode into the path of an auto. The auto hit him, but he wasn't injured. However, his bicycle was demolished. The woman who was driving the auto, Luthera Mason, was not ticketed by police, who said it was not her fault. However, she paid for a new bicycle for the boy.

In Kansas City, a woman was arrested for smoking a cigarette in a city park. In court, the judge told her "Women shouldn't smoke in public." The woman answered "Why not? They are doing everything else that men do!" She was immediately fined $500 and sentenced to six months in jail.

Two boys, ages 7 and 8, said they were bored and wanted to "start something." They pulled the fire alarm box at 4th Avenue and 13th When the fire trucks arrived, the boys ran. Two firemen ran them down and turned them over to their parents. The parents agreed to apply home remedies.

A box of money was found in the basement of a Frederick poolhall this week. It contained gold and silver coins and about $2,000 in cash. The sheriff believes the money was stolen in a Frederick bank robbery last week. No one has stepped forward to claim the money.

    — 100 Years Ago is taken from the original pages of the Greeley Tribune, the Weld County Republican, and when they merged, the Greeley Tribune-Republican...

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
    (Ephesians 4:17-18)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...
    (Psalm 1)
