Biden raises amount of ethanol that must be blended with gas

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Biden administration on Friday set new requirements that increase the amount of ethanol that must be blended into the nation's gasoline supply but reduce previous ethanol-blending requirements due to a plunge in fuel demand during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Environmental Protection Agency said it would set the 2022 levels for corn-based ethanol blended into gasoline at 15 billion gallons. But even as the new rules increased future ethanol requirements, the EPA retroactively reduced levels for 2020 by 2.5 billion gallons and by 1.2 billion gallons for 2021, reflecting the lower amount of ethanol produced and decreased sales of gasoline during a period when the virus led to a drop in driving.

Most gasoline sold in the U.S. contains 10% ethanol, and the fuel has become a key part of the economy in many Midwest states. The fuel consumes more than 40% of the nation's corn supply, and ethanol and other biofuel production plants offer jobs in rural areas that have seen steady population declines over the decades.

President Joe Biden is among many politicians from both parties who have frequently promised to support increases in the renewable fuel standard...

I had no idea that 40% of our corn went to ethanol. Sounds good to me.

It's a bad idea in many ways. For one thing it burns faster than gasoline so it's going to compromise miles per gallon and the actual savings amounts to maybe only 5 cents per gallon. Plus it will mess up other engine types like motorcycles, boats, lawn mowers, etc.

E15 is safe for most cars manufactured in 2001 or later, and most car companies say it's fine to use. However, some car manufacturers recommend not using it for certain models.

To be completely sure, GasBuddy's head of petroleum analysis Patrick De Haan said car owners should consult their owner's manuals before filling up on E15, especially to ensure you're not doing something that could void your car's warranty later on.

Other gas-powered things that cannot use E15, according to the Department of Energy: Motorcycles, heavy-duty vehicles, boats, snowmobiles, chainsaws and gasoline lawn mowers. And if you own a passenger vehicle made before 2001, you shouldn't use E15 in it....

Yeah, we really need more oil production, these schemes to cover over the oil shortfall are just mind games. They are diverting more corn production to ethanol while simultaneously warning of a food shortage. I feel as if the clowns that are perpetrating these policies are simply mocking us.

    Drill baby drill!

I forgot that we are in the midst of a fertilizer shortage! How does all that work?
