100 Years Ago: New state armory planned for 8th Avenue – Greeley Tribune

100 Years Ago, for the third week of May 1922, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:

A Galeton man appeared in Greeley court today, looking like he'd been in an explosion. His face was badly damaged by two men who attacked with a single tree (wooden bar) and a garden hoe.

Three tramps snuck onto a railroad car and stole a box of oranges. They were caught by La Salle police and the judge sentenced each of them to 30 days in jail.

The state is going to build a new, $41,000 State Armory on 8th Avenue near the Camfield Hotel. The floors will be maple, and good for dancing. The basement will house $15,000 worth of military fighting equipment.

A Greeley woman told a court judge this week that she hasn't been able to watch over her children because there were so many church meetings she had to attend. Both the judge and the Greeley police chief told the woman to cut back on her church attendance and take care of her children. Some church ministers are angry about that notice.

High winds in Colorado last week damaged plants, houses, barns and other items. Some windows were broken by the winds, and trains have stopped operating at times. Great Western Sugar reported they had the beet seeds blow out of the ground on 135 acres of a farm north of Greeley. Great Western gave the farmer free seeds to re-plant.

A man who stopped his auto between Greeley and Windsor was arrested when he started throwing bottles at passers-by. Police arrested him when they found the bottles contained illegal booze. They also found a large container of whiskey in his car.

The Johnstown Campfire Girls will present a 3-act play entitled "Aunt Maggie's Will." It will include the songs, "Aunt Mandy's Troubles," and "When Polly Put the Pepper in the Tea."

Fifteen female students at the State Teachers' College here were put on college probation on April 10 and were just released from it today. They broke a college rule by attending a high school dance in Eaton.

Some Weld County cattle were given experimental foods from the Colorado Experiment Station in Fort Collins. They won first place in a Denver cattle show. The experimental food was a combination of sunflowers, wet beet pulp, molasses, cottonseed cake and alfalfa.
