100 Years Ago: Local man's car stolen, striped for parts – Greeley Tribune

100 Years Ago, for the end of March, beginning of April 1922, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:

The mayor of Indianapolis sent a dozen live roses to Greeley Mayor Charles Todd. They do this every year, send roses to hundreds of mayors across the country, hoping it will give publicity for the Indianapolis Carnival.

Dave Blhem reported someone stole his Ford Touring Car from in front of his house during the night. It was found three miles east of Greeley, and all of the tires, auto parts and extras had been taken. They only left the shell of the auto.

This week the mayor of New York City signed a bill that would allow women in the city to smoke. Before this, smoking was all right for men, but against the law for women, and they could go to jail for smoking. It was a women's group who pushed for the change.

At a trial at the Weld County Court House, the jury was secluded in a room while court matters continued in their case. The delay was so long, the jurors used the backs of their tablets, cut them into small playing cards and then drew the deck faces on them. They then played cards until they were allowed back into the courtroom.

In another courtroom, two local attorneys almost got into a fistfight over a land deed. Both threatened to punch the other during the argument, and the judge had to calm them down.

Be aware that Saturday is April Fool's Day. It is a day in which jokes and pranks are played on everyone. Do not believe everything you hear or see on April 1st. Be careful what you eat.

Edit Note: "Time works wonders. So would we if we could put in 24 hours every day, like time does."

A large number of stolen items was turned over to the police department Tuesday. The items, which included several pairs of shoes, dresses, coats, scarves and six fans. They were found in No. 3 Ditch. The police placed them on display, and now the station looks like a second-hand women's store.

A woman's King Eight Tour Car caught fire just outside of Greeley, and she jumped from the vehicle to save herself. Farmers nearby came to her aid, and shot a hole through the gas tank to drain the auto of gasoline. The auto was a total wreck.

A 15-year-old Greeley boy took his parents' car without permission and drove it around town. He was finally stopped by police after his father reported the auto theft. The boy told officers he 'd rather go to jail than return home. However, after one night in jail he said he wanted to go home.
