100 Years Ago: ‘Meanest thief in ten states’ steals eggs from under hen – Greeley Tribune

100 Years Ago, for the second week of March 1922, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:

The meanest thief in ten states is somewhere in Greeley or Weld County. This thief stole a setting of eggs from under a hen in a chicken house on 5th Street. The eggs will hatch in a day or two, and this thief apparently knew that.

The first Kiwanis Club in Greeley has been formed. Dr. N.A. Madler is president. There are now more than 700 Kiwanis Clubs in the United States and Canada.

The weekly home party of the Dorcas Class ended differently this week. The men all left the party house and went to house of a friend to have a midnight lunch.

The sheriff and Weld County Commissioners have worked to get a police radio set up in the county building. It would allow officers to have contact with their station without having to stop and use a telephone.

Warrick Norcross has the city's permission to give a "free" 4th of July celebration. He will charge to sit in the grandstands and for refreshments, but nothing else. He is conducting motorcycle races in the field.

The Teachers College here has so many students, it has brought more than a million dollars to the businesses of town. That's according to the Dean of the college.

A Loveland farmer was found not guilty in court this week, even though he shot a young boy. The boy was stealing watermelons from the man's garden, and he fired twice in the air to frighten the boy away. When the boy started running with the watermelon, the man chased, then tripped and fell, accidentally setting off the rifle. The boy is okay.

In Briggsdale, the flu is hitting the people who live there. Many have come down with the flu and forced to stay at home, including some school teachers.

The sale of sugar beets was down last year. A farmer said he probably wouldn't raise beets this year. "A man who raises beets is sure of a lot of hard work, but isn't sure of any profits."

In Denver, it's not unusual to see boys under 15 staggering around because of the liquor they drink. Yet Denver abuses us because we have outlawed liquor to everyone. Our boys don't stagger.

Note received by a teacher: "Willy tells me you've been asking where are his glasses? You can tell him he had his tonsils removed this summer and he doesn't need glasses."

    — 100 Years Ago is taken from the original pages of the Greeley Tribune, the Weld County Republican, and when they merged, the Greeley Tribune-Republican...

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
    (Ephesians 4:17-18)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...
    (Psalm 1)

Who woulda thunk that the meanest thief in 10 states was a stealer of chicken eggs? Man times have changed.
