100 Years Ago, for the first week of March 1922, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:


A group called the Near East Relief has approached Greeley, asking citizens to donate to help the starving Russians. Russia is being attacked by Turkey, and the citizens are starving.

Denver obtained a professional baseball club. Four men in Denver bought the franchise from Joplin, Mo. They will be playing in the Western Baseball League.

The sheriff and the County Jail are working to find a way for men who are in prison for bootlegging can work and make money to support their families. Also, there have been numerous arrests of teen-agers for bootlegging whiskey.

The MacMillans hosted a bridge party at their home in Greeley. There were seven tables for 28 bridge players, and Mrs. Rothchild took home the winning honors.

In a civil suit at the courthouse, one man was awarded $2,764.37 by the court, but the loser did not have any money. So, the judge told the sheriff to go to the losing man's house and auction off his belongings until they reached the amount of the lawsuit.

The men who make up the membership of the Weld County Good Road Advocates met with the state highway engineer and said they accomplished a lot. New roads will likely be started around Weld County very soon.

It was a blizzardy time in Greeley this week. Temperature fell below zero, and snow blew in, making it uncomfortable for pedestrians and autoists.

Streetcar fares in Greeley will be lowered to 5 cents next month. For the past several months, they have been 7 cents. The streetcar company hopes more people will ride the streetcars now, to make up for the price reduction.

Members of the Denver Ku Klux Klan sent a letter to a (Black) man in Denver and threatened to kill him. He fled to Utah. The Denver District Attorney is looking at the case and said "It's the first unlawful act of the KKK in Denver." The letter was signed by several men and was written on official KKK stationary.

A 15-year-old Greeley boy ran out of money when he got involved in an illegal gambling den. The boy then wrote three worthless checks and stole $8.60 from the home of an elderly woman. He is in jail now.
