100 Years Ago: Man accused of theft tells judge he’s not guilty because he was drunk – Greeley Tribune

100 Years Ago, for the fourth week of January 1922, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:

A Greeley man, in court for stealing a robe and a coat from an auto downtown, told the judge he shouldn't be guilty because he was drunk when he did it. The judge was not happy with the excuse because it is illegal to drink alcohol. And the man was also driving drunk. The man got a $100 fine and 60 days in jail.

Four teenaged boys were arrested this week for thefts. They sneaked into the college gym lockers and took money from the clothing that was in the lockers while the owners of the clothing and cash were in their gym clothes in the gymnasium.

Ault's consolidated school is regarded as the best consolidated in the state and one of the best in the nation. For that reason, the Teacher's College in Greeley named the Ault School as the college's Demonstration School. That means students from the college will visit the school regularly and learn the good aspects of teaching.

A small frame house at 1603 12th Street was destroyed by fire last night. The house, which was only 10-feet-by-16-feet, was valued at $100. The woman who lives in the house said she lost all of her possessions and a $5 bill that was in a drawer in the house.

A strong cold front, moving in from Wyoming, dropped Greeley temperatures to 22 degrees below zero. The Wyoming low two days ago was 34 below zero.

With the large increase of cows in this area, the Greeley Creamery has set a new record for making butter. In 1921, they made 250,000 pounds of "Shady Brook" butter.

For you people who rent out their farms or homes, make certain there is no bootlegging on your property. In the Mead area, a rental farmer was making whiskey on the property and was caught by the sheriff. The land and house were claimed by the county, because of the moonshining and lack of tax payments. The owner of the farm was not charged, but he lost the farm.

A local church pastor while saying Greeley is the best place to live, also criticized the town. He cited unpainted billboards, which are "eyesores," the unpainted grandstand in Lincoln Park "Stands out like a sore thumb," and he said the fountain in the park is rarely filled with water and most of the time, is filled with trash.

    — 100 Years Ago is taken from the original pages of the Greeley Tribune, the Weld County Republican, and when they merged, the Greeley Tribune-Republican....

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
    (Ephesians 4:17-18)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...
    (Psalm 1)
