100 Years Ago: Judge’s car rolls down 11th Avenue before hitting curb – Greeley Tribune

100 Years Ago, for the fourth week of December 1921, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:

A new Ford auto owned by District Judge George Bradfield coasted down 11th Avenue for a block with no driver or passengers and hit the curb very hard, blowing out a tire and damaging the steering mechanism. The judge left the car parked on the hill and went inside to get his children. No one was hurt.

"The people of Greeley have been thoroughly awakened by the stories in the Tribune about the destitute people living here." Those were the words of John Naton, commander of the local Salvation Army. He said the destitute have been helped very much by the Greeley donations.

In Chicago, a contagious disease hospital is being investigated for experimenting on children. Some children who came down with contagious diseases have been kept in the hospital for as long as four years.

People say "money talks," but you can't pay a bill over the telephone.

Sam Goldsant, Greeley's leading junk dealer, received a Christmas present from the District Court on Christmas Eve. Per his request, they legally changed his name to "Sam Gold."

The Eaton Herald newspaper printed an editorial criticizing Greeley and Weld County: "Weld County is the China of Colorado. While we are the largest and wealthiest county in the state, Larimer County can walk over us whenever she pleases." The editorial stated that Larimer County is getting the paved roads Weld County needs, but didn't apply for.

Because Christmas comes on a Sunday this year, there will be no afternoon or evening services for the Baptists. Services at the churches have been cancelled so families can spend Christmas Day around their firesides.

A Weld County farmer, A. Foster, spent $80 for a pheasant Christmas dinner, but will not be able to eat it. He and two sons were caught hunting the pheasant illegally, and they were fined in County Court here. The pheasant they shot were sent to Denver for someone else to enjoy.

The Universal Motor Company of Greeley will be celebrating Christmas Eve by giving away 50 Flivver Ducks for children to ride. Parents sign up now!

An Eaton man who received as new pressure cooker for Christmas was arrested on Christmas Day using it to make illegal booze. The sheriff found gallons of 70-proof liquor brewing in the new cooker.

    — 100 Years Ago is taken from the original pages of the Greeley Tribune, the Weld County Republican, and when they merged, the Greeley Tribune-Republican. ...
