100 Years Ago, for the first week of December 1921, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper.


» Letter to the editor: It is Sunday morning, and the newspaper delivery boy throws it into my yard, despite the strong winds. I find 17 pieces of my newspaper blown around my garden fence. Can't the Tribune find a way to secure the newspaper in a better way?

» ADVERTISEMENT: "Pine Knot Lump Coal: No dirt, no soot, no clinkers. $8 for one ton. Two tons for $15.50. Pine Knot Coal Company, 719 7th St."

» Local cigar manufacturer R.A. Franz suffered a head injury when his auto ran off the road near Brighton and almost overturned. He was treated for the head injury and is apparently rapidly recovering.

» Dean Gilpin Brown of the Stater Teachers College here: "The young people of today do not dance. They paste their cheeks together and romp to the music. And the music they romp to — Ugh!"

» A Weld County District Court judge bought a new hat and brought it into court. After serving a decision in court in favor of a Nebraska man, the man accidentally left the court with the judge's hat. The judge was angry about the supposed theft. It was traced to the man's home in Nebraska, and he came back to Greeley to return the hat. The judge was happy again.

» A fresh beef sale is happening at Boyd's Help Yourself Grocery and Market. Beef roasts are 10 cents per pound, and all cuts of steak are 15 cents per pound. Pure hamburger is also on sale and contains no cereal.

» Three Greeley officials, despite the heavy snowstorm Friday night, braved the roads to make their speaking dates. All three had their autos swing off the roads because of the snow, but all three made it to their locations and were positively heroic.

» Richard Hunt of Eaton and Sallie Bennett of Johnstown wanted to be married Wednesday and checked the homes of three ministers to complete the marriage rites. All three ministers were not home, so the couple went to the Justice of the Peace to get married. They are now happy.

» Many reports recently of milk snakes entering houses in Weld County. Unlike what most people think, the milk snake is harmless to humans and enters the houses to eat mice, not to drink milk.
