100 Years Ago: Local, national professors debate life on Mars – Greeley Tribune

100 Years Ago, for the third week of October 1921, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper.

» COLUMN: "The weakness of the theory that a family of five can't live on less than $1,500 per year, is the fact that several million do."

» Five-room house for sale on a good location on the east side of Greeley. Electric lights, five large rooms, fruit and shade trees, large garden. Can be bought for $900 on easy terms.

» The Highland Lake area in Weld County was visited by rain and snowfall Thursday night. It was badly needed, making sugar beets much easier to plow out.

» The Bates Music Co. in downtown Greeley has many new hit records, including a special one: The Isham Jones Orchestra, playing "Ma! He's Kissing Me!"

» In New York, Emma Burkett was found guilty of forging a check. It was for $69,900, and she forged former President Teddy Roosevelt's name on the check.

» Students now enrolled at the State Teachers College here, had a "Welcome to Greeley" gathering at the Sterling Theater downtown. When the students marched from the college to the theater, there were songs being sung and special shoutouts. The line into the theater was three blocks long.

» Four little boys in Greeley, ages 3 to 11, have been sent to a state home. Their mother died, and their father abandoned them, sneaking the children into the grandfather's house while he was gone. The grandfather is very ill now, and authorities can't find the father.

» Add a few drops of ammonia to the water for your indoor plants and you will find them growing better.

» Three hunters from Ault were in the mountains northwest of Fort Collins this week, hunting deer. They didn't get any deer, but came back home with the bodies of three black bears and a coyote.

» The Piggly Wiggly Store in Greeley was robbed of about $300 last night. The owner hid the money behind some canned goods when he left the store last night, and when he returned today, the money was gone.

» Breweries across the country have been closed due to prohibition, and the owners are now asking the U.S. Congress to make light wines and light beers legal again. Also joining in the petition are hundreds of former brewery employees.

» Professors across the country and at the college here are debating the question of life on Mars. One professor said he received a radio signal that probably came from a Martian.

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
    (Ephesians 4:17-18)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...
    (Psalm 1)
