100 Years Ago: Alarm clock, baloney sandwich thief vanishes after hopping on train car – Greeley Tribune

100 Years Ago, for the end of August and beginning of September 1921, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper.

» A man believed to be a hobo was armed when he robbed the Western Light and Power Co. in Greeley. He held an employee at bay and took a new alarm clock and a baloney sandwich. When he left, he crawled on the roof of a train car, heading to Fort Collins. When the train arrived in Fort Collins, the bandit had vanished.

» The Weld County drive against prairie dogs has begun. For 15 cents per acre, the county will scatter grain dosed with strychnine poison to kill as many prairie dogs as they can.

» The new State Minimum Wage Law for teachers has raised their salary. Teachers will now be paid $75 per month.

» Paul Dill was fined $10 and court costs after having been guilty of parking his auto in the middle of the street in downtown Greeley. The case probably wouldn't have gone to court, but Everett Bush was driving in the downtown area and hit Dill's auto. There was extensive damage to the Bush auto.

» Information: The name of the letter Q comes from the French word "queue," meaning a tail. That's because the Q is actually the letter O with a tail.

» Two bicycles were stolen from the Teachers College bike rack last night about 8:30. They were taken by two young ladies (?) in white with hair done up. It will be greatly appreciated if the bikes are returned. One is needed by the owner to deliver Tribune newspapers.

» Hibbs Clothing Co. is advertising "Back To School" clothes for boys. They include the boys' first long trousers to begin school. Long trousers are required in schools these days.

» In Kersey, a pipe smoker escaped serious injury when his pipe blew up. It seems that somehow a .22-caliber bullet got mixed in with the pipe tobacco, and when the pipe was lit, it exploded into many pieces. The smoker received some minor burns.

» Weary Willy, a well-known Greeley moocher, was picked up by police. He had four weeks growth on his face and hadn't taken a bath in a year. He was escorted by police outside of Greeley, and was told to keep walking and not come back. He said he is heading for Casper, Wyoming.

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
    (Ephesians 4:17-18)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...
    (Psalm 1)

I love using old words. Lately I have been saying hobos instead of homeless. We have quite a few of them in our area.

I have never heard that word before. Fits just fine for contemporary usage!

I grew up in a neighborhood where the railroad tracks were just a few blocks away and I remember every once in a while a hobo would knock on doors asking for a sandwich.

Apparently they had codes that they would write on telephone poles or curbs to help other hobos.

Very true. When I was a toddler late 1950's, our backdoor was marked. My mom walked to the back porch where the basement door was and one morning saw a hobo come out. Scared the both of them. My dad worked for the county sheriff at the time and that incident never happened again. :)
