    Full Moon Dec.25

Christmas full moon to arrive for 1st time since 1977
Next one doesn't take place until 2034, according to U.S. Navy Astronomical Applications Department

This year, when you look up at the sky on Christmas morning, you'll get a Christmas treat that no one has had since the year the original Star Wars movie was released — a full moon.

The last full moon of 2015 will be at its fullest at 6:11 a.m. ET on Christmas Day.

If you're younger than 38, this will be your very first Christmas full moon, since the last one was in 1977.

It's taken six Star Wars movies for the moon to skywalk back to full illumination on a 25th of December. The release of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens takes place on Dec. 14.

The next Christmas full moon is isn't expected until 3:54 a.m. ET in 2034, according to the U.S. Navy Astronomical Applications Department's moon phases predictor.

However, there will be a full moon on Boxing Day in 2017, which means the moon will look pretty close to full on Christmas Day that year.

Full moons fall on Christmas as often as they do on any other day of the year, but it's relatively rare for full moons to fall on any one day, whether it's Christmas or July 1 or your own birthday.

The moon becomes full every 29.5 days, or 12 to 13 times a year. But because the moon's cycle doesn't divide evenly into the number of days in our calendar year, the full moon(s) for a given month is shifted about 11 or 12 days per year. Next year's December full moon takes place on Dec. 14.

Moon turns full on December 25, 2015

Astronomically speaking, the moon is only full for an instant – at the moment that it’s 180o opposite the sun in celestial longitude. This happens on December 25, at 11:11 Universal Time.

Although the moon turns full at the same instant worldwide, the clock reads differently by time zone. On a worldwide scale, the full moon actually comes at all hours around the clock. See the worldwide map below. The full moon takes place before sunrise December 25 in North America, noon in Europe and Africa and after sunset December 25 in eastern Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Moon cycles are not commensurate with the calendar, which is based upon the seasons – not the lunar cycle. Therefore, one year from now, the December 2016 full moon will not fall on December 25. In any year, the phases of the moon take place about eleven days earlier than in the previous year. For instance, the December 2016 full moon will happen on December 14, 2016, and the December 2017 full moon will fall on December 3, 2017.

Amazingly, the moon’s phases recur on (or near) the same calendar dates every 19 years. This is because 235 returns to full moon almost exactly equal 19 years. This is known as the Metonic cycle. Therefore, nineteen years from now – in 2034 – the full moon will once again happen on December 25.

The moon will look plenty full tonight as it lights up the nighttime from dusk till dawn. Look for the full-looking moon to rise opposite of the setting sun at early evening. The moon will shine highest up for the night around midnight and then will sink low into the western sky as dawn colors the sky.

You had me wondering if there was some sort of prophetic significance. ;)
