100 Years Ago: Downtown speed limit raised to 15 mph; man pulls 12-inch ‘whale’ out of Loveland lake – Greeley Tribune

100 Years Ago, for the third week of July 1921, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper.

A Fort Lupton man was arrested for selling a drink to a man for $3.50. Because of the smallness of the transaction, I will make the penalty small, said Judge Elbert English. However, the man got a $150 fine and 30 days in jail. Shocked, the defendant said, "I wonder what I'd have gotten if I'd sold a quart."

Greeley City Council voted unanimously last night to change the town's speed limits. Downtown limit was raised from 10 mph to 15 mph. Residential areas now have a speed limit of 20 mph. It is still illegal to drive faster than 10 mph when turning a corner.

The price of gasoline for autos in Greeley has fallen to 23 cents per gallon. The station owners expect more drops in the price.

A man believed to be of unsound mind challenged several fishermen on a lake in Loveland. He bet that he could dive into the lake and catch a whale by hand. He dove in, and came up with a 12-inch trout. He said it was a whale. He also told them that he'd cut several telephone wires in Loveland and had them wrapped around his neck. He is now in custody of the sheriff.

A 15-year-old Greeley boy got into a fight with his father, who ordered him to move out of the house. He rode his bicycle to Loveland and has been sleeping in a rude camp near Lake Loveland. He has now been arrested for breaking into the lake's concession stand. He took a few pennies and a small amount of gum and candy.

A Greeley man, early Sunday morning was trying to get gasoline for his car, and knocked on the door of an Ault farm house. A voice inside said, "Get out of here! For the last eight years you have been persecuting Catholics, and this is no place to come for aid. Get out of here or I'll ..." And the Greeley man ran away for safety.

Some young women were brought to town in motoring cars to spend some time away from YWCA camp. One of them saw a dill pickle in a store and bought it. She shouted how delicious it was, and soon, more than 200 girls rushed the store to buy pickles. The store quickly ran out of its pickle supply.

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
    (Ephesians 4:17-18)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...
    (Psalm 1)
