100 Years Ago: A stray bullet lodges in a neighbor’s neck, but neighbor is OK – Greeley Tribune

100 Years Ago, for the fourth week of February, 1921, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper.

The Great Western Sugar Co. is reducing wages for all their employees. Hourly wages will drop by 5 or 10 cents, while monthly wages will decrease by $5.

Miss Dorothy English, a former Greeley resident, now teaches in Arriba, but the Arriba schools have closed this week due to the Smallpox quarantine. She is staying home, and won't come back to Greeley for fear of spreading the disease.

Thanks to the motor-car popularity, there is now an auto-bungalow available to all who want to camp comfortably in the woods. The auto-bungalow offers the auto engine, attached to a small type of housing. It means the owners can drive it into a camping area and sleep well and warn inside at night.

Does Greeley want a National Guard Unit? That is the question that will be asked this week as the NGU is looking at organizing in Greeley. It would mean 65 enlisted men, a cavalry unit of 35 horses and a motorized battery unit.

At a home still near Frederick, a large amount of illegal booze was confiscated this week. In a machine that appears to be a large coffee mill, the suspect was making 50 gallons of moonshine per day. It is said to be extremely vile whiskey.

To many superstitious people, several types of birds are connected to death. If a robin or pigeon enter your house, they say it will result in someone's death. Even worse calamity is expected if an owl gets inside the house.

Twenty-five neighbors surrounded the home of newlyweds Mr. and Mrs. Edward Tegtman late Friday night and began chanting loudly for a celebration. The couple finally got up and opened the doors, welcoming everyone. They served the only treats they had: apples and cigars.

Weld County State Representative Harbaugh introduced a bill that would fine farmers if their cattle got off their land and damaged other farms. Harbaugh said he hopes this will encourage farmers to build more – and stronger – fences.

John McCarthy, 19, has a bullet in his neck, thanks to a neighbor boy. The Neighbor was shooting his 22-rifle and one bullet went toward the McCarthy home and lodged in John's neck. It is not a serious wound, and doctors said they will remove the bullet soon.

    — 100 Years Ago is taken from the original pages of the Greeley Tribune, the Weld County Republican, and when they merged, the Greeley Tribune-Republican.

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
