    100 Years Ago, for the third week of February, 1921, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:



    Families and businesses throughout Weld County celebrated Valentine's Day with parties for family and friends. You could find hundreds of hearts and flowers in front yards and inside the homes.

    Farm for sale: 108 acres east of Greeley; 5-room house, cattle barn, second barn, 80-ton silo. Total price, $20,000

    A prowler was reported in the 400 block of 9th Street entered a coal shed and stole a large amount of coal, plus the coal shovel. Police are investigating.

    The Alfalfa Dodder, a worrisome weed that can kill fields of alfalfa, has been found in Weld County. Steps are being taken to kill the weed before it spreads any further. Other names for the weed are Love Vine, Strangle Weed, Hair Weed, Devil's Hair, Devil's Gut and Hellbind.

    At Mr. Hubban's home in Evans, thieves stole 23 of his Rhode Island Red chickens. They are worth $4 each, according to the victim.

    At the Greeley Rotary luncheon, an odd food was served. It was called the "Hoover Lunch," named after President Hoover. It consisted of pea soup and rye bread. No butter was allowed and there was no other side dish.

    The price of potatoes continues to rise. The selling price at local stores is now 80 cents for a 100-pound bag.

    Eighth grade students at Barnesville held an interesting public debate on Tuesday. The topic: "Athletics are more important than history or geography.

    Because of the rapid increase in gang activity in Denver, the manager of safety has ordered all Denver police to "shoot to kill" all bandits and prowlers out at night..

    Dr. Charles Steinmetz, the "Wizard of Electricity," said the future is good. "In our houses we will soon have electric washing machines, ironing machines, even electric devices for cooking and heating."

    More buffaloes can be killed with a bow and arrow than with a gun, according to hunting experts. While they have the same killing power, the bow-and-arrow is silent and doesn't frighten away other buffaloes when shot. Also, the bow-and-arrow can be re-fired much faster than a muzzle-loading rifle.

    In one Valentines' party this week, young people from the Greeley Christian Church went to the home of some newly-weds to celebrate. There were games, and treats for the young people, including candy, apples and free cigars.
