Beautiful Gospel Quartet Songs You've Probably Never Heard

imo, the 1950s version of the Statesmen quartet is the best Gospel quartet of all time. That's because they had Denver Crumpler and Jake Hess as tenors. A young Elvis idolized this group and would later say that his ballad style was influenced by Jake Hess's vocal style. Denver Crumpler died in 1957 at age 47 of diabetic shock misdiagnosed as a heart attack. Their national TV show was hokey by modern tastes. But listen to Denver take the lead in a Gospel song most of you have never heard--"I'll Tell It:"

As a pastor, I selected a steady diet of praise choruses for both services in my last church as a concession to youthful tastes. But personally, I much prefer old-time Gospel music and groups like the Statesmen. In the next video the Statesmen sing 2 beautiful Gospel songs you've probably never hears: My God is Real" and "His Hand in Mine:"

More such songs to follow. Please post Gospel songs that you think we've never or seldom heard.

Personally, I have never liked quartet, southern gospel or choir style music.

When I was saved I went to a Church of God in the south, so there was a lot of that (including 'regular' praise/worship music). Just being saved, that's what you are exposed to so you enjoy it. I don't care for it much now, but every once in a while I will hear something from back then that I don't mind listening to.

I'm familiar with all three of those songs. My favourite songs come out of the hymnals, preferably AG, Baptist or now and then Methodist. I'm not a quartet fan but like Southern Gospel.

As a pastor I want a worship leader to seek what the Holy Spirit wants for the service. It is amazing how many times a song you never would have picked fits right in with the message and touches someone who needed to hear it at that moment in time.
