For those of you with Netflix and like music documentaries...

There are a couple of great ones on there. We signed up for a free month at Netflix and I found these two documentaries to stream. One is called "The Wrecking Crew". Here's the blurb on it:

"The Wrecking Crew" (sometimes called "the Clique" and "the First Call Gang") was a loose-knit circle of Los Angeles' top studio session musicians whose services were constantly in demand during their heyday in the 1960s and early 1970s. In varying configurations, often anonymously, they backed dozens of popular acts on numerous top-selling hits of the era. They are considered one of the most successful session recording units in music history.

It included a few musicians who went on to be famous, the biggest of those being Glen Campbell. Also Leon Russel was a part of them. It is done by Tommy Tedesco's son. Tommy Tedesco being the premier guitar player for the studio musicians. These guys played on hundreds of hits in the 60s and early 70s. They were actually the musicians for bands like the Monkees in the studio, even playing all the music on band's songs such as The Byrds 'Tamborine Man'. Songs like "You've Lost that Loving Feeling, from rock and roll to Frank and Nancy Sinatra, Cher, etc. Just a really good documentary if you're into them.

The other is "Muscle Shoals" about the recording studios in Muscle Shoals Alabama (some of you may remember the line from 'Sweet Home Alabama' that says, "In Muscle Shoals they have the Swampers...", the Swampers referring to the studio musicians there). From Percy Sledge to Aretha Franklin to Wilson Pickett to the Rolling Stones and Rod Stewart and all the music that was recorded there. Duane Allman was actually one of the studio musicians there at one time. The interesting thing though is that the backup musicians to all these black artists that recorded there were actually white. But because of their 'funk' and the way they played everybody thought they were black. When Paul Simon went to record there he told someone that he wanted 'those same black musicians that play on the records there', and was informed they were all white.

Anyway, just a couple of great music documentaries. Lots of great inside stories and info. "Muscle Shoals" starts out a little slow but then really picks up. There may be a little 'language' in them since it it musicians. :)

Hmmmm...I watched something on Youtube not to long ago. I think that might have been it. It on Netflix too?

You really need to watch The Wrecking Crew if you can. I think you'll really like it.

Yeah, I will watch Wrecking Crew per your recommendation. Lemme look at the Youtube thingie and see if that's it.

Ok....so there's lots of stuff under, "History of the Eagles" on Youtube. I assume it's the same thing on Netflix. The two hour one is the one that is on Netflix.

Hey, did you ever see Sound City? Oh_my_goodness. Another amazing, profound, documentary about music. And not just music, but our music we grew up with (for the most part). Now that should be mandatory viewing for everyone! If you havn't seen it, you will be blown away. Anyone who loves music and is from our generation will find it fascinating. Since my son used to run sound at the FPF, I told him he MUST watch and he loved it. So even he knew it was great.

You can see the trailer for it on Youtube. Check out the trailer and try to see if you can find the full movie sometime on VH1 (that's where I watched it) sometime. It is incredible. Talks a lot about the recording process and how it's changed.

Looks interesting. I'll have to check it out. The bearded guy with the guitar standing with Tom Petty at 1:03 is Rick Rubin, the guy that started Def Jam records with Russel Simmons and became a major producer. He also helped resurrect Johnny Cash's career before he died and was responsible for that great cover and video by Johnny of Nine Inch Nails' 'Hurt'.
