I haven't seen it (I haven't seen any movie in a long time) but my mother saw it and was very moved by it. I don't know if she read the book. So... guess I won't be contributing to the discussion much.... so..... bye I guess!

LOL...ok, I thought it was a very good movie and can see how it could minister to those who think that God is distant, mean or uncaring. It places a heavy emphasis on just how much God does love us and how He cares about every aspect of our lives. The movie oozes the love of God and one of the lines I really liked was that we were created to be loved.
We had a lot of discussion here about how the author might be a universalist but I didn't notice that in the movie, tho maybe we should have wondered if he was a cessationist. While the movie constantly reinforces just how deeply God cares for us and is always near there were a lot of bad things that happened that were attributed to evil in the world, and while God promises to always be there with us there is no talk of how to overcome that evil, only that it'll be alright once we move on to glory.

I believe that is the key thing...the emphasis on relationship...I know some felt God should be more stern and demanding repentance...and more condemning of the killer...But that was the essence of the message....God loves sinners and died for them....
Krystian...what did you think of the judgment scene?
Cessationist....not sure bout that....the emphasis was on living independent vs. dependent. Adam chose to become independent of God and mankind continues to do that...
What I really liked was the absence of the theological terms..not because they bother me but more because they probably confuse many....like choosing to live dependent on God is a relationship term that is equivalent....seems to simplify it...
Since this was dealing with the STUCK due to some tragedy I did not see the love concept over emphasized....in fact in a discipleship class I would probably START there and build....relationship is often the last thing new disciples are taught...the emphasis is far more on theology...
I haven't seen the movie or read the book so I never wanted to be critical one way or the other but some of what I have been told about it bothered me as a Word-Faith guy:
1. I was told that there is no reference to Satan's part concerning the evil in the world.
2. No acknowledgement of the divine protection that God promises us and that we can pray concerning our children.
You and Quest can confirm or deny that this is missing from the movie. But Gee whiz, I would think that if God is going to have a dialogue with someone that He would at least talk about Satan's role in evil even if He doesn't talk about His promises.

A belief in a devil or personal, evil spirits is frowned upon these days or should we say demonized ? It's one of the first things that anti-religious people will attack.
