    Red, processed meat causes cancer

    Well surprise, surprise!! (note sarcasm )

    Processed meat, such as bacon or hot dogs, causes cancer, according to a World Heath Organization group. The group says red meat, including beef, pork and lamb, probably cause cancer, too.

    Many studies show the links in tests that show how eating these foods can cause cancer, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) said in its report, released in the Lancet medical journal.

    "These findings further support current public health recommendations to limit intake of meat," Dr. Christopher Wild, who directs IARC, said in a statement.

    Most reports on the links between meat and cancer have been softened with some element of doubt, but the IARC uses clear and direct language in saying processed meat causes cancer. There are no phrases such as "may cause" in the report.

    "Overall, the Working Group classified consumption of processed meat as 'carcinogenic to humans' on the basis of sufficient evidence for colorectal cancer," the report said.

    "Additionally, a positive association with the consumption of processed meat was found for stomach cancer. The Working Group classified consumption of red meat as 'probably carcinogenic to humans'," it added. "Consumption of red meat was also positively associated with pancreatic and with prostate cancer."

    I actually thought this was well-known. It's not the meat per se, but the nitrates and nitrites that are the danger.

    Norway has strict restrictions on the use of that, stricter than the European Union. My guess is that the EU is stricter than the US.

    I suppose it is a good idea to eat as natural as possible when living in the US. Which means figuring out which bacon is the "real hog" in terms of additives and which isn't.

    I actually don't think once in a while will do much. It's the constant consumption that causes problems.

    A very close friend lost her mother to stomach cancer and her mother ate processed cold cuts all the time on sandwiches.....she even tried to warn her mother about nitrates and nitrites, but her mother ignored her. It was very sad. She was diagnosed and died very shortly thereafter.

    BTW...nobody ever thinks they're gonna get a cancer diagnosis. Me included.

    Oh yeah....you can get nitrite-free bacon.

    I've only been buying the uncured (non nitrate versons) for years.. The thing that gets me the strange looks is when I request "those pieces in the back that don't have as much fat" because.. well, it's BACON! lol

    Yeah, even nitrate-free bacon is all fat with a few tiny strips of "meat" running through, which I find completely disgusting and revolting. And then when "pork belly" started becoming really popular, that was even more revolting. People actually love that nugget of nothing but pure fat. Good grief. I want to vomit when I think about it!

    I just really don't understand the love of animal fat at all. Never have....even as a lil southern girl who grew up eating nothing but comfort food with bacon grease poured over stuff and lard in the pie crust and all that. I've always picked the fat off of bacon, but truth be told, I havn't been much of a pork eater for pretty much my adult life, with the rare exception of pepperoni on pizza once in a while. But sausage, bacon, etc...never buy it at all. I did buy some Canadian bacon for my family a year ago, but that's about it. If I ever got a bacon/egg/cheese biscuit from somewhere, I'd pick at the bacon before I ate it.

    Oh, I get it.. I love the BLT's.. and bacon and eggs.. and having it in other things as seasoning.

    BUT, I'm completely with you on the fat part.. I get it home and sometimes cut all the huge parts off.. which is why I stopped buying it unless the ratio is really high for meat to fat. Sometimes it's a lot better than others.

    But, lard… ew.. deal breaker for me.. We've stopped going to some restaurants because they use it. Although, I've heard that they've banned it some places in CA. Not sure on that though.
