Before and after weight loss...
Well Catchy inspired me to post this with her healing/weight loss thread. She poster her pics and really looks good. I have met Catchy and Jewel several years ago in Charlotte when we all weighed more than we do now. Jewel has lost a bunch of weight now too. :)
Anyway, the before pic is from 2005 and was taken on the boardwalk in NY City. I actually started losing the weight in March of 2009. Since then I have lost 125 lbs. I could have done it sooner but just going back and forth a lot since '09. I was down and got back up at the beginning of this year, and have lost 75lbs of it since January. I've worked out for many years just going to the gym and doing cardio and lifting weights even though I was overweight. I had made the decision I was going to do that even if I didn't eat right. So I was still working out when I was that big. Then 5 months ago I joined Crossfit and started doing more strenuous workouts. Recently even though it's not a part of the daily workout, after I do the Crossfit workout I will then go jog a mile. So I'm getting into better shape all the time.
So here it is. The right pic was taken on Sunday.

Looking like in the picture to the left makes a lot of people frown at one. They will assume that one is somewhat carnal, having a problem with controlling impulses. That one is a glutton or at least without the willpower to keep the weight down. That one is lazy and unwilling to do any type of exercise. That one doesn't bother about how one looks. It could have to do with every other kind of problem including medical ones but people will start with that and then perhaps let themselves be persuaded in the other direction. But not when they pass one on the street, typically. I think it is easier to have a Christian witness if one is within normal weight. People have a tendency to look at that and then assume a general lack of self control, especially if one fronts something different like a message of holiness.
I'm about 6'2.5 and 195 pounds, so I'm quite lean with a relatively muscular upper body. When I wear my jacket that is sewn in at the waist during the warmer months I sometimes get a feeling that people look at me with emotions of envy or admiration. If we disregard stuff that has to do with male-female attraction. Recently it has gotten colder again so I wear my winter jacket which is quite large to fit my big shoulders and also correspondingly large around the waist. It is made to fit a man of 250-300 pounds. The feeling I get after wearing that for a week or so is that the stuff I mentioned is gone and now I sometimes get the opposite kind of looks that are in line with what I talked about above. Like I'm some out of shape, flabby, lazy kind of type. Which is especially funny when I notice that the one looking straight at me is obviously less fit than I am. It's not as bad as wearing a "fat suit" as some people have tried and were shocked at people's attitudes but it is a little bit like that, especially when compared to walking around in the other jacket. Believe you me, the difference is noticeable to me. Especially when I feel tempted to flex my muscles to scare off someone with a "you're a fat, lazy person" stare.
The second picture will garner no kind of looks, even here in Norway where there are fewer obese people. You simply look normal for your age.

Nope, Nikos. I'm actually not overweight by the BMI=25 standard but only by 5-10 pounds.
Obesity starts at BMI=30 and there are far more Americans who are obese than Norwegians. The numbers get skewed more and more the higher one goes. At BMI > 40, there are ten times as many Americans as Norwegians, by percentage.
BMI > 30 is where health problems increase significantly and people start looking literally out of shape. BMI = 40 is morbid obesity and people are likely to die young.
